I know the title may be a bit cryptic.

But, being the Inventory person that I am; I wonder how you control your Cellars.
First In - First Out

First In - Last Out

Last In - First Out

Last In - Last Out
Me I prefer FILO.

That way, I keep my hands off of the oldest until...

I use a combination of FILO and FIFO. I buy a lot of bulf tobacco in 5# bags which give me between 6 quart jars (for hard-pressed flakes) and 10 jars (loose cut blends). I keep out 1 or 2 jars for current use and the rest goes into the cellar for at least a year. After a year, I will take out another jar or two and leave the rest to develop some real age. 12 months seems to be the time frame when most Virginia-based blends show the most improvement, after that the improvement slows down. When/if I ever crack open a jar of 10 year old 5110 I'll send you some. (Don't hold your breath, it'll be a while before that happens. :puffpipe: )

I guess it's mostly the grab whatever suit my fancy, UNLESS I had a TAD attack in which case it's one of the new blends I got (LIFO).

No method to the madness here. I keep tins on hold for a year or two, and bulk gets smoked right away, sort of. Some of it gets jarred and forgotten, lol. Here lately it's been one tin to try, one to save. Joining this forum has only made it worse, heh heh.

That's pretty much my method...

A pound of 1Q as a "go to".

And, 3 tins 1 to open and two for the cellar.

I have a kind of wave action going, and it seems to be building slowly but nicely.

I'm pretty much the same as Arthur - grab what ever method. However, I have different places I store stuff. Some of them are more out of sight out of mind and tend to let the tobacco get more age. So by accident, some of mine are FILO, but when I come back from a show with new stuff and leave it sitting on the coffee table, it can end up being FIFO.

I buy certain tobaccos in bulk, half it up and store some away for a few years. The ones I do smoke, it's whatever mood I'm in. So the grab and go method for me.

I don't have the patience for cellaring. That being said I have forgotten about some tins only to find them much later; stored in the most unusual places. Ipso facto defacto cellaring.

I have never given this too much thought, but I guess I was leaning to first in, first out, after reading this thread I can see that first in last out would be the way to go. Having said that I having been buying 1Q in 5lb lots since last sept. I have been jaring 3 quarts and smoking what was left. I ran out of fresh and decided to open one qt that was 10 months old, I could really see the change. Now how long will 1-Q age, If I ever run out again I will use the last in if you guys think it will age more than 1 year.

Thanks

Jerry

My blends are all lined up in a row for grab and go. The beauty of pipes are diversity of the instrument as well as the infinite choices of the experience. Time, place, mood, temperature, company. I never make a plan ahead and never place a bet on the spontaneity of the moment. Tonight it's Penzance in my straight grain billiard. A large bowl for a long lasting slow smoke.
