I don't like being told what to be mad about. This is why I avoid network news like the plague. I come here, because we (most of us) are a group of friends that knows each other pretty well, and it is nice to have like minded folks to relax and enjoy a like hobby. Since the FDA has "mobilized" I have seen many posts that were meant to stir us up. People get mad, and people have gotten kicked out over it. I see no value in just getting mad.
So, since the FDA has been harassing our friendly neighborhood tobacco manufacturers, we have seen the split in the road. Either get mad and wallow in our emotions. Give up the hobby entirely and take up a new hobby. Or, like many of us, devote a huge portion of our budget to tobacco hoarding. I now have more than twice my body weight in tobacco hoarded away in every nook and cranny of the house.
So, now with the news that pipemakers are starting to get the "shake down" by the FDA, we can either throw chairs against the wall, or find a positive spin... and, I for one, am going to reroute the energy that I was putting into hoarding tobacco (Switch Gears) to hoarding pipes. This will support the pipe artisans and the retailers who we all love and cherish.
Support our sponsors by buying as many pipes as possible. My suggestions... (for what it's worth) buy artisan pipes. The factories can deal with the FDA better than these individuals that work out of their homes. And, there is always going to be a market from folks that can't afford artisan pipes. And, buy through the sponsors, because they are on the frontlines of the FDA fight already. And, there is always going to be a large group of folks buying direct from the artists with custom requests.
So, factories and custom orders will probably still flourish, but the small amount of us that participate on the forum can bolster the sales of artisan pipes through retailers.
Of course, if you prefer, you can just get angry and throw chairs, but I am just suggesting a way to turn this all into positive action, verses unbridled anger.
But, I for one, want to try to do something positive in a way directed at fixing the problem in a way that I can control. Otherwise, do what you want.

Why is getting mad not an option? May I suggest a Boston tobacco Party? :puffpipe:

Jokes aside, I dont think the FDA is going to close any Pipemakers anytime soon, because if they start regulating products that can be used for tobacco consumption, they can start regulating any paper manufacturers too. And you simply can not ban a substance outrigth. It does not work. We tried that once with alcohol and it ended in one of the greates eras for organized crime in the history of the world. 8And you could argue we are still doing it with the whole "War on Drugs"-thing that made the situation actualy way worse) You migth call me overly positive or optimistic, but I see something similiar happening with tobacco in general. The harder regulations make it to get and manufacture, the more people would get curious about it. It migth take a few decades but at some point the regulations simply wont work anymore. Regardless, I have more then enough tobacco to be set for a few years and my Pipe Collection is basicly complete. I no longer aquire new pipes but simply swap out a pipe here and there for something I like more.

I agree, but artisan and factory is a tough split. I can tell you that Kaywoodie is pretty much a one man operation, why not support 150 year old family business, third generation running it and fourth generation pipe maker? He doesn't have some vast resources to fight the FDA either. Just food for thought that "artisans" aren't the only ones trying to keep food on the table. The message is solid though, and I concur.

Considering that FDA can't inspect food processing plants but about once every half century if that, going after a cottage industry like pipe carving, which is by no means a cash cow or growth industry, seems patently absurd. Next, raids on home knitting shops and people who can their own jam. It will prompt black market pipe carving. Oh brother. It sounds like some kind of reverse psychology ulterior motive, but whatever it is, it's a misuse of actually somewhat limited funds. Let's get a little more rat poop out of my peanut butter and skip the pipe carving cartel.

Haha, get mad if you like. Buy kaywoodies. Hoard the corncobs in the pantry. Heck, do what you like. I was just trying to find a positive way to direct otherwise useless anger.
I just really enjoy the company of you guys on this site about as much as I enjoy pipe smoking as a whole. I just want to see us take this energy and do something positive.
Is it possible that there may come a day when we have to grow and trade our own tobaccos and make our own pipes... like they did 200 years ago?

Fortunately I make my own pipes and have you to help me learn to grow. But yes, positive redirection seems a better goal. I just provided an opinion. Hopefully you don't think I was offended by your artisan comment. Especially since as much as I support Kaywoodie, I too am an artisan.

Cosmic, I agree.

The key word I get from your thoughts is, support. Support however you choose.

I would also throw out there to not be silent. Let your gov. reps know this is unacceptable and it's time to rein in the ATF or FDA or whom ever. The squeaky wheel gets attention. Only afer these agencies' bosses tell them enough, will anything stop. All our support has less effect than one well placed phone call to the right person. I have seen it happen up close and personal.

Right you are! My life is much more than a cigarette or bowl full of tobacco.
I buy blends locally where possible and send moneys to a couple of "etailers" over the year. That's pretty much my support of the industry.
Philosophically I can't get worked up about the so-called "war on tobacco." I can't think of a single negative to my life if tobacco suddenly disappeared. A few positives but, not one single negative.

For some odd reason I hit the "send post" button too early and omitted the following:
Well, there is one the one negative of not being able to scratch one particular itch ... nicotine. But, even that is quickly surmounted with the passing a couple of weeks.

I thought the government was "shut down". What are these jerks, volunteers or something? They must all be like that one creepy suckass who used to iron J. Edgar Hoover's panties and help him put on his sock garters.
