A pipe can be many things for many people. I find it particularly suited for deep contemplation. Whether pondering a mystery with Sherlock Holmes, trying to outwit the Dark Lord in military and evasion strategy with Gandalf, or simply working your way through writers block while creating the latest masterpiece, the right pipe helps to form our thoughts. Whether it is a calabash, churchwarden, freehand, or something simpler, the right design can speak to us.

Do you have a favorite pipe to help you connect with your muse?

I like craggy rusticated pipes when reading. Reading the grain of the pipe with your hand like Braille. This Marvic “fat bastard” is my favorite reading pipe. I specifically asked Gary for chunky rustication for a reader.

I recently purchased a Polinski pipe. It is a very large full bent. This is my first pipe of this shape and I found it very good for reading. It is certainly not a clencher, but it is not in front of the book I am reading. It has a large capacity, so I can smoke / read for a long time. Also, it seems to burn consistently, without a lot of fiddling.

I never consider the tactile input from a pipe. Definitely a feature I want incorporated into a future pipe.

That makes sense. I am starting to shift in the direction of larger volumes of tobacco and a slower pace. I like devoting more time to my contemplation sessions.

That's why most of my collection are sandblasts. As for the romantic notion of a pipe for contemplation, never really got into that. Smoking a pipe is just something I do regardless of the activity. If I'm doing something, a pipe is there with me.

It is the romantic notion that first drew me in... The fact that I was smoking my dad and grandfather's pipes and later, while writing, the notion that I am smoking Capstan while writing ala Tolkien. I see your utilitarian point Embers but for me the pipe serves both as "just part of my routine or who I am" as well as a romanticized raison d'etre. So to speak.

BTW, for work writing, I pre-pack 3 to 4 pipes before starting a session just as I will choose and refill 3 or 4 fountain pens. I typically pack 3 with the same blend and one with something completely different. I would choose pipes with a "texture" if I had them. But 1 rusticated is a nosewarmer and 1 blast do not lend themselves to writing.

I keep my Tom Thomb in my pocket for short smokes when out. I still try to find a location or short time to enjoy the pipe (river overlook, sunset, unique architecture, interesting conversation with someone I bump into.) I am hesitant to smoke just to smoke, I feel as if I would be crossing the boundary into abuse. Romanticizing/rationalizing allows me to get more out of it.
Writing with fountain pens aquadoc? Stylish.

I love the idea of expanding our consciousness into the tools and environment we are a part of. Like any tool, the pipe becomes a part of who we are.

Historical pipes, perhaps owned by someone we admire would also contribute to our thoughts. Aquadoc, your smoking of your father's and grandfather's pipes is an aspect that I appreciate.

If I ever have a deep thought I' ll let you know what I was smoking! It will probably be my Dunhill shell bent billiard filled with MacBaren navy flake. Those two smoke on autopilot.

You already combined shell and Navy, both of these are associated with the Deep. Like smoke from your billiard a thought is sure to rise to the surface.

Almost any pipe if the thoughts start to flow, but to name four: Ferndown smooth bent billiard; Ser Jacopo blast w/serpentine square shank/stem; Missouri Meerschaum large/deep bowl natural bent Dublin; Johs extra large semi-rusticated slightly bent apple. Any of these take a handful of blend or single leaf and smokes for most of an hour or more.

Pipestud, do you have a pipe that makes you want to take more Excedrin than other pipes?

I don't really have a pipe I favor for deep thoughts.

I guess I need to get a Jack Handy pipe.

Jack Handey "I don't advocate that children start smoking. But for those kids who already do smoke, boy, it's good, isn't it?"

I guess any kind of churchwarden would work. I find I usually hold my hand around my bowl more when I'm deep in thought; weird way to say it I guess.
