Merde de Cheval is one of my favorite blends. It was the first blend that I detected a distinct flavor. I get a lot of a mostly tart almost sour flavor from it that I really like( also get the same from other blends like LEO from Lane ltd and even Rattrays Bagpiper's Dream). I have been on the lookout for other blends that deliver similar flavor. Recently tried Peterson Balkan Delight(I found it to be neither. Too much Perique which I don't care for) and tonight I had my first bowl of Presbyterian. My first impression is that it was kind of a let down. Not much flavor at all but unlike the Balkan Delight I'm going to keep trying this one in other pipes( I tried it in a Cob). Presbyterian was mostly just a generic tobaccoflavor with a moment of a nice toasty bitter flavor and a period of spiciness(sp?) that made me think it had some perique but it isn't supposed to. So again I'm asking the more experienced pipe smokers here, what tobacco is known for that nice tart flavor? I would like to explore more tobaccos in that vein. I'm open to suggestions.

Give Dunhill Durbar, Dunhill London Mixture, and GLP Westminster a try. Durbar is considered a 'Balkan' and LM and GLPW are Oriental forward English mixtures. You'll get a tangy, tart, spicy acrid taste.

Thanks Unkleyoda. I'll keep those in mind. Looking for less spicy and more tart citrusy. Not a fan of perique although Merde de Cheval is supposed to have some in it and it's one of my favorite blends.

Tobacco so good that is so good that they dared call it Merde de Cheval. Reminds of the old SNL skit where Dan Akroyd says "Mangled Baby Ducks. That's right, Mangled Baby Ducks! Picture a jam so good that you'd dare to call it Mangled Baby Ducks! Great Jam! It's beautiful jam!”

Sounds like you're looking for Yellow or Bright Virginia flavours for that "tartness" mouth feel.
