I went to some antique shops yesterday. In one of them they had a big basket filled with pipes, someones collection. I went through them all and discovered this lovely BBB pipe along with an old Dunhill "windshield". In all the excitement I payed and didn't check them too close, and when I came home I discovered the Dunhill had been repaired :( Anyway I decided to clean it and keep it for now, aaawww typical! I payed about $70 for them. The BBB had some stamps on its silver ring, I don't know the age, but I really like the shape, thought I'd share

My first Dunhill was a repaired estate. It was a great pipe and I'm sure yours will be too.
I think that BBB is a real find as well. Please post pix once you clean it up.

Thank you! Yes I like the Dunhill anyway, it has a bit of history to it. I will surely post some pics when cleaned. According to this site the BBB should be from 1918.

I don't know but this may be of some help....

There are a ton of this kind of thing on the web that may help you nail down a date on the silver.

romeowood: That's good to hear, promising thoughts for when I have cleaned it up then. I will go back to that shop tomorrow and have a look, I'm sure there was more old BBB's there, I will let you know if there's anything I would like to get rid of later.
Lawrence: Thanks! Yes thats exactly like the one I used to date mine, it seems fairly accurate

You will need a British chart for the BBB dating. I had one saved and now can't find it. Try here.

Thank you.

Unclearthur: Good link! That will help a lot, there are some additional stamps ( really small ) aswell that I think could be local ones.
The Dunhill shank has probably been damaged, cracked or something. It has been cut of and partly replaced by a bacelite or vulcanite piece. It can be seen in one of the photos. It says "S right after Dunhill which probably is the start for "Sandblast" or such. Also just the first numbers of the patent is visible, starting with 119... Could that be 1930's? Although it's a solid repair and seems to work perfectly! It came in a hardcase too.

I have a Dunhill that I am going to have to band. It was subjected to what I call an idiot repair that needs covered up.

Thats too bad Unclearthur, and good that you will fix it properly. What is the most common repair type for broken wood shanks? Or that probably depends a lot on the pipe model? Do you know if Dunhill did their own repairs and how you can spot one?

Silver bands are the repair I see the most for shank damage. Most often it is due to some jug head beating Hades out of the pipe to empty the bowl.

About the oval stamp below the lion. That is most likely the Swedish control stamp founded in 1913 for all imported silver and gold, and the "S" stamp for silver.

I think I got a PAD at the moment, because I went back to the shop and could not resist these beauties, especially for the price I paid. From the top, a Parker, a Masta, and two Loewe & Co. I better buy some more pipecleaners :puffy:
