I have always been a solitary pipe smoker. I’ve glimpsed a few others in the wild, but never had the opportunity to sit down and “talk shop”, so to say...

Tonight, however, I had the pleasure of meeting up with our own @Jwebb90. Jacob was my Secret Santa buddy, and a damn generous one. Turns out we only live 20 minutes apart. He came over and we spent a good 3.5 hours in my basement garage smoking and talking about pipes, tobacco, marriage, life, etc. It was truly a delight to nerd out with a fellow pipe smoker - Jacob is one hell of a cool dude.

He generously shared some 25+ year old Bengal Slices and a whole crap load of mason jars with me, and I tried to return the favor as best I could with some 2014 Christmas Cheer and 2019 Cringle. The spirit of giving and the sharing of knowledge and wisdom was inspiring and uplifting.

If there is a point to these musings, it is to thank this awesome community for connecting us all through this hobby, lifestyle, vice, etc. that we enjoy so much. I never would have hung out with Jacob were in not for this forum.

If you all have fellow pipers in your area that you haven’t met, go out on a limb and try to meet up. Share a few bowls, a few drinks, a few stories with them. It’s wonderful to meet the people behind the username.

That so cool that you got to connect. I am also a solitary pipe smoker, but more by fate than preference. I would like nothing better than to meet up and smoke pipes and have brilliant conversation with fellow smokers.

Now that my wife and I are on a two year plan to leave the wonderously postive and agreeable place called Washington, I hope to be much more available for meetups with anyone in/around Tennessee.

If you’re going to be anywhere on the south side of Nashville, you’ve got to go hang out at the Briarworks shop! Super cool dudes, great conversation, and fantastic higher end tobacco selection. I used to live very close to where they are now located in Columbia, TN so I stop in every time I pass remotely nearby. Always worth it.

I'm also a solitary pipe smoker.
What a shame that so few smokers these days smoke pipes.

Smoking a bowl, maybe with a nice sipping liqueur, while shooting the breeze with another pipe smoker would be a pleasant way to pass a couple of hours.

Since I'm not a clencher I smoke my pipe when behind my laptop or when otherwise not doing much.
So it's a leisurely, relaxing pastime for me. Simply a good excuse to relax.

Those nasty, yukky cigarettes [yes, I'm an ex-cig smoker . . . how could you tell?] suit the fast pace of modern life. An efficient quick way to get a hit of nicotine [That goes to show why vaping has replaced cigarettes for many smokers. Plus I'm told that, unlike cigs, vapes come in all sorts of nice flavours . . . wonder if there's such a thing as a tasty Va/Bur or Va/Per juice? . . . but I digress]

Whereas pipes and pipe tobacco are something else entirely in more ways than one.
In my case, since I only choose blends with no more than mild nicotine, addiction is no longer the motivation.

Now I simply smoke for pleasure.
All I need do now is to find myself a pipe smoking buddy to add to that enjoyment.

I'm so pleased you have found a piping buddy.

Like most I was a solitary piper until I mentioned my love of pipes to a couple of cigar loving buddies and found that they also love smoking pipes. One of them gifted me with an unsmoked Dunhill which his father had left him (along with several other high end Brit wood pipes from the 60s & 70s) and some well-aged blends. The other friend wanted advice on estate pipes to purchase, and I gifted him with a few pipes from my small collection.

I do enjoy a couple of hours of quiet solitary contemplation most days, but a couple of hours of shared enjoyment with a line-minded mate is so much more pleasurable.

Most all of us are solitary smokers. There’s an old fella that I see walking with his pipe daily. The impulse to wave is strong. He likely knows why I did that.

While I was parked and smoking on the waterfront, an old fella waved at me in happy recognition. Not a word spoken but I understood.

The only other person that I know to pipe is the owner of a local Golf driving range. The air is thick with Captain Black Regular. He rides around collects golf balls with lit pipe. He’s a grumpy one. Definitely a solitary smoker. Haha.

A cigar lounge might be a place to spot an occasional pipe smoker although they don’t cater to Pipe needs these days.

I'm a solitary smoker most of the time. Both my son and son-in-law smoke pipes, so we get together and smoke on occasion.

I do plan to meet up with Kozeman at his brewpub for a smoke and a couple of beers when this Covid nonsense is over. We live in the same county, probably 20 minutes away from each other.

My wife and I have talked about taking a couple of weeks and doing a road trip or train trip to Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City. If this happens, I'd like to meet up with Mike Thompson. Again, Covid...

Cool. If Forums posts are any indication, most members have stories to tell, yarns to spin, and at least some convivial aspects to their personalities. Some people just aren't going to jibe, but there is certainly a lot of conversation at pipe shows. One older fella smoking a pipe in the grocery store parking lot all but fled when I asked about his blend, but maybe he was in a hurry.

I haven't met a fellow pipe smoker in my 7 years of piping. I have taken to smoke my pipe more in public, even though my wife hates it, in the hopes that an old man walks up to me one day and pulls out his pipe, raises it in a gesture of solidarity, then, with a single tear drop falling from the corner of his left eye, he smiles at me. He gives me a quick nod, adjusts his hat, then turns and walks away, the scent of Granger wafting from his now lit pipe.

It is rare to see a fellow pipe smoker in the wilds, but it happens occasionally and I always gleefully point them out to my wife and she rolls her eyes and gives me the "Whoopty Doo!" look... like she's thinking maybe I'll grow up and be an adult one day!
Haha... jokes on her!
