I just came back from a trip to Germany and was pleased to find that a tin of Dunhill Nightcap (which I have yet to try) was only 12 euros. All the pipe tobacco over there was only about that or less. Very cheap.

I should have brought more back but I wasnt sure what the customs laws were back home. I could have come home with 5 tins instead of one but thats cool. Just means I have to go back to Koln and spend some more euros!

Prices of pipes were reasonable too, I could have bought a Shrlock Holmes la Strade for 205 euros in an East Berlin smoke shop.
I can't wait to get back over there again, so civilised compared to Sydney.

Indeed, 10-12 euro for 50g is normal in some parts of Europe. In others the price is double that. In the US it's even cheaper in general from what I understand.

That's the thing. When I'm there I try my best to stay low-key and do things their way. When I was a military brat over there, not so much, so I didn't get as warm a reception. Plus, I was among the Hessians who really don't like having their routine interrupted. You usually can't even tell I'm American until I open my mouth. I do that on purpose to deter crime.

The Germans are a funny lot, you have to know how to take them.

Good people really and if you speak German it helps too.

Plus they let you drive at insane speeds on the autobahns!

Good god, in Canada I expect to pay between

$20-$30 (usually on the high side of 20) for a 50g tin in a B&W

Here in the UK we find Tobacco to be very expensive. (I've never bought tobacco on mainland Europe so I dont know the prices)
Rolling Tobacco 25g - £1.50 - £8

Pack of Cigarettes - £2 - £15

Pipe Tobacco 25g - £4 - £8

Pipe Tobacco 50g - £10
Tobacco prices are quite high, its taxed to death here, and it would be great to buy from the US, but the tax man would jump on me.

Obviously brands ect. make a difference, but some tobacco can be quite cheap here, at my local ASDA (US equiv of WalMart) you can get 25g of Cutter Choice Rolling Tobacco for about £2ish ($3)

Pipe tobacco is hard to come by here, there are very few tobacconists as smoking is pretty much outlawed in our society, and most shops only stock cigarettes.
The opposite can be said about alcohol, there a very few if any restrictions on alcohol pricing here, that coupled with the 'supermarket war' means you can pick up a Tesco value can of beer for about 50p ($0.78) or less.

Waves to Martin from Bris-vegas.
Germans & Bavarians have a real "Us and Them" mentality, and it's pretty full-on.
Many Americans who travel these days will actually say they're Canadian to avoid being snubbed ... this trend must be plastered all over various travel forums as it's only something relatively recent methinks. In some parts of Europe it could actually save your life the way things are currently!

Prices in Spain are awesome, but most EU countries are also fair, charging less taxes for cheaper blends like mcbaren and borkum riff (6.5 euros in Austria and Germany). The UK sucks in that regard.

You guys don't know how good you've got it! Borkum-Bloody-Riff, the cheapest of the cheap, over here in Oz is $40 for 50g of dried horse shite, and everything else goes upwards from there!
