I don't have a lot of time to go on this fine forum, but for some reason I have time to purchase estate pipes off of eBay!

When sellers, (with the best intentions I'm sure) buff the living crap out of a nice old Dunhill or GBD it is really sad, kind of like watching a fine old violin get refinished by a garage hobbyist, destroying its tone and slashing its value down by a considerable amount. Over- reaming also destroys the pipes value and serviceability. I urge sellers to leave the pipes to a professional or just don't mess with the darned thing. Buffing machines should be avoided, and if you don't know how to ream a pipe, don't!!

I'm with you! When buying on ebay I actually try to avoid those offers where the seller has tried to "clean" or "refurbish" the pipe him/herself. For me that work is actually part of the fun of buying those estates :)

Half the fun is refurbishing the pipe yourself. Taking the time to bring a well loved pipe back to the realm of the living.
