Estate Peterson 307 pipe

This is my first Peterson and I bought it from SP for 80$. The listing https://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/estate/ireland/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=703400
doesn’t mention any issues with the inside of the bowl. I wiped out the bowl coating and noticed this dark patch. Even after wiping the bowl out with a damp paper towel this area remains. I smoked a bowl as slowly as possible but smelled/tasted burning wood midway through. My worry is if I keep smoking it will just get worse slowly but surely. I researched mixing up some pipe mud but wanted to hear what more experienced smokers thought of this. Cheers and happy piping

I assume you know you bought a used estate pipe. Just wanting to point that out incase there was confusion there.

But it doesn’t look bad in the picture to me.

Ok. Wanted to make sure of that before moving on.
It really doesn’t look bad. If it was a used estate pipe they may have reamed it before selling it.
Is that dark spot smooth or rough?

Smoke it a few bowls and it may clear up any issues.

Bowl coating in an estate is usually there for a reason. It covered a burned spot. Removing It imo, is on you. It might burn more, it might not.
If you want, you can mix some powdered sugar and water slurry and spread it over the burned spot. You may have to press it back down after smoking. It will eventually carmelize hard and protect the burned spot.
Or you can forge ahead and see what happens.

I thought it looked ok to me. But if you're tasting wood that would be a concern for me. But, I would defer to @ashdigger because he has a ton of Peterson estates.

That being said I wouldn't worry about that one. I'm a believer in bowl coating and use them on the estates that I smoke.

It looked reamed to me too but it’s hard to tell with my bad eyes.

Wanted to post an update, been smoking the pipe and the spot is not getting bigger. I used some pipe mud and smoked some burley for a cooler smoke. The pipe mud came off at some point but I am confident I can build a cake with the pouch of half and half I got from SP. Overall I appreciate your insights and hope you have a great weekend!

Looks good. Smoke it lightly and just wipe it out with a paper towel and build up a like cake. I have a Pre Republic 307 and like it a lot.

Sometimes when I get an estate where I suspect that there could be some internal damage to the chamber walls, i take out all the cake to be able to check. Even if the walls are perfect i have to be extra careful to smoke the next 2-3 bowls not too hot, until a thin protective layer of cake is formed again. If I smoke those bowl while restoring for example, i get distracted and get one or two puffs in which i taste briar... Not optimal, but also no real damage done... It should be fine, just keep smoking it and you can even let the pipe rest for a couple of minutes if you feel it get a bit too hot. If you still get the occasional burnt briar taste, even after the first few bowls, then I would clean the chamber again and coat it. Anyway that's what makes estates fun for me - figuring out what issue the pipe has and figure out how to fix it so the pipe could be used and enjoyed again.
