I just bought an 1960 Erik Nording freehand off of ebay. I really like the way the pipe looks but I've know nothing about his pipes other than he is Danish, I'm hoping to get a little insight before it arrives. Can anyone shed any light on his work?

Pipedia page probably a good place to start.

Don't be scared of the Search function on the Forum either. I remember his pipes used to be more popular so there's probably some great archived discussions.

You just want to know about the guy, or the pipe. It's hard to tell you about the pipe, when I can't see it. But the guy... he is a brand now. As far as salesmen go, he does a great job of pitching and representing his pipes. Between the pipe's time that you have and now, he could have taken his company into one of two directions, he could have stayed an artisan pipemaker, or he could become a rep for factory made pipes. He chose the money. I can tell you more about how I feel about his pipes of today, but it would probably have no bearing on the pipe you have.

Yep, tons of info about him with a very few minutes of Google.

I took a liking to the brand's hunting series and have a few of those and looking forward to what this year's brings since I thought last year's was pretty fowl, pun intended. Every one I have is a good performing pipe, in general the rest of the line hasn't interested me.

I have a new one, the only Nording I own. It's super light, very comfortable in the hand and mouth, smokes like a dream. The bowl coating is the best I've encountered so far (cake builds easily and quickly but is also easy to maintain).

Downsides? It smokes SUPER hot if you're not paying attention (which has taught me to slow down -- a good thing), and something about it imparts a slight "artificial" taste to the first few drags of a light tobacco. Maybe the stem, maybe the coating, haven't figured out which yet.

It's an awesome clencher that usually smokes best if packed tightly.

I’ve owned several Nordings over the years and they’ve all been excellent well made pipes. The one I still have, one of Nording’s handmade, is a favorite, smokes well and and just makes me happy to smoke it. Nording also did mass market, offering well made inexpensive mass produced pipes that people liked quite a lot.
In the mid seventies Nording took over the production of Barling pipes for Imperial Tobacco for several years.
He’s more in the Bjarne tradition, producing inexpensive well made mass produced pipes with a side of personally made high grades.

I have a few Nordings and I like them but I'll echo what @The Novice Piper said and that they do like to burn hot but with a bit of adjustment to the cadence they work well.

I really like the designs where it's a two tone between the rusticated and smooth briar, it's a cool effect and makes for a striking looking pipe.

I never bought one but have been tempted by a few on more then a few occasions. My impression is they seem to have the philosophy that the Danish style doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg. And some of their pipes seem interesting and weird without boarding on tasteless or garish. Or in other words they make some other pipe brands seem excessively pricy. But again never owned one, never held one. Or and the compass while I've heard good things about, always felt wrong to me in some way that is totally a matter of taste and not anything else. I'd get a falcon before one of those.

It came today after the first bowl it moved to the head of my rotation, Smokes great and a good relaxing hour long smoke reflecting on the day and winding down with three fingers of Woodford Reserve on the rocks, end of the day don't get any better than that.en.jpgen1.jpg

I've been a mite interested in a Nording since I started smoking a pipe, but the vulcanite stems were a deal breaker. Now, after reading that they tend to smoke hot, I don't think I'll be buying one.

Eric Nording was part of a pipe company called SON that year and was partners with another man who I can't remember his name....That would be a SON pipe...Nording pipes came later.
