Yup, it’s clay. The first time I saw one I had the same question but I was able to handle it and confirm it was clay. Kinda wish I’d bought it but … I didn’t.

I forget the specifics, but it has to do with the metal ferrule. I will check when I have more time, but it probably won’t be until the weekend. I have to leave for New York shortly.

IIRC, the clays found these days are generally/mostly from the 40's when briar was hard to come by during WW2. But, I believe that they can be found as far back as the 1906 catalog...
