The pipe will soon arrive and then I could do more testing if necessary, but I have been doing some research and for now I get signs pointing to 1940s clay pipe.

Yup, it’s clay. The first time I saw one I had the same question but I was able to handle it and confirm it was clay. Kinda wish I’d bought it but … I didn’t. 🤷🏼‍♂️

IIRC, the clays found these days are generally/mostly from the 40's when briar was hard to come by during WW2. But, I believe that they can be found as far back as the 1906 catalog...
