I've never smoked anything other than aromatic blends before, but this week I got my first sampler of English blends - and I like them! A lot!
This opens up a whole new world of flavors and aromas to explore. And today I ordered a few Oriental blends for the first time. And an ounce of Latakia and an ounce of Perique out of curiosity.
And what tops it all off is that next week I'm turning in my retirement notice. At the end of January, I'll be a free man!! (School's out forr..ever!! )
Can life get any better than this???

If that's pure Latakia and Perique like McCllends sells with the black label you may want to just take a taste and don't denounce either in future blends because you smoked them straight. To me and probably most people those are condiments to enhance a blend and although some people will smoke them straight most people who may love them in a blend wont smoke them straight. I am glad to see you exploring new baccys that's what makes pipe smoking so great enjoy. Congratulations on your retirement I still have a good 30 left give or take.

I know I'm English but I don't see the problem with the calling of a English Blend, there is a history to how this style of blend came about, is it really a problem to call a non aromatic English, it is a tradition that has been about for many years and we should be proud of pipedoms traditions, some English blenders refer to their aromatics as American Blends, is this so wrong ? no, it is part of tobacco history

Congrats on discovering the joys of smoking English blends, and your retirement! Next, you'll need to experience VA's and VA/Pers. Happy puffing!

I had the same type of Latakia conversion last Summer, but smoked so much of it, I sort of burned out on it for awhile. Since the colder weather came in I've been smoking more aromatics again in the house, but broke down and had a little Latakia last night. I did a blend of a medium English from my local B&M with a little burley and BCA, and it was nice. I'm thinking I may want to get back into smoking more Latakia blends now, but not the real Latakia bombs, indoors at least. I think this weekend, I'll be seeking out a lighter English.

You might want to try one of the "crossover" English blends - lightly topped. Altadis has two that I know of - Burma Road, which I like, and Count Pulaski, which was just a so-so. You can get 'em at Pipesandcigars.com for $3.50 for one ounce - a good way to try them out. :puffy:
