gave my friend a petes sys standard, carter hall, pipe cleaners, and a pipe nail today. we used to smoke cigarettes back 30 yrs or so ag together. he quitted some time ago, but started on cigars lately. few weeks ago, he said he wouldn't mind trying pipe. so got him a new pipe and things. we'll see if i'm an enabler.

Most generous of you! I'd say starting out with a Peterson system pipe is the high road indeed.

I did the same recently. I have a friend who often bums a pipe off of me when others are smoking cigars. He didn't have his own pipe so I gave him an old Wellington (I'm not as good of a friend as you apparently!) , some Sir Walter and a pipe tool for Christmas. I think it's a good thing!
"Enabling" doesn't necessarily have to carry a negative connotation!

You’re a great friend and a generous one at that! I gave my friend a bright red Rossi bent billiard when he picked up pipe smoking. Not that I would but I’m relieved I didn’t give him a Peterson System pipe. My friend bangs his pipe on the nearest hard surface to empty his bowl at the end of a smoke. His once smooth pipe is now rusticated!
