I recently purchased an M.M. Elf Cobbit and was planning on smoking through it last night. So I thought I'd give it a quick clean before lighting into it for the first time and noticed that inside the "shank" (I thinks that's what it's called), there was a fair amount of "saw dust" and splintering to the wood. I cleared the dust out and some of the splinters but even then, when I passed a pipe cleaner through it, it kinda shreds the fibers off the cleaner. Do I need to be concerned or should I just fire her up?

Hi, welcome to the forum. You might want to try using a sharp drill bit of the correct diameter of the shank to 'ream' it of loose shavings, splinters etc.

Jay.

I had a smaller cob that needed the same, and basically did the above. They have to be produced quickly to make them for $5, so expect a few rough edges. Hope you enjoy the pipe. Those look really fun.

I appreciate the forum welcome, and the advice. I'm glad that it sounds like a fairly easy fix. I'll get right on it!

Even my highly regarded MM Reverse Calabash needed some work on the draft hole. Use the suggestions above, and enjoy your cob!

Everyone needs a little work on their draft hole. If you get burning sensations, apply Preparation H!

<p>Wait, so now I'm really concerned! I get the Prep H and imodium to remedy a little burning and clogging, but what I have is SPLINTERS!!!

Quick update: I cleaned and reamed as best i know how and though remains of a few small splinters yet exist, I fired that bad boy up. The draw was smooth and unhindered and to me it smoked great! There was some gurgling about halfway through the bowl but that was my fault. I started "chugging" away and that caused the problem. Once I backed off a bit, it returned to the smooth cool smoke it started out with. Thanks for the help!

Try drying your baccy a little more. Not quite biscuit dry but much drier than you think it ought to be. It's surprising how much moisture is in tobacco even if it feels dry to the touch.
Glad you got your shank issue sorted.
Regards,
Jay.

Thanks for the tip! I actually thought the leaf was quite dry but I'll let it air out a bit more and see what happens.
