I like it a lot. Sort of "old timey" not only in presentation but in taste and room note as well. Probably best to think of it as an American English. They claim it is a blend that was around 70+ years ago and I can believe it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Hi PaPipeguy,
Is Spilman like a Balkan, with bitterness and earthiness from the Turkish/Orientals, or is it more like an English/Scottish, with some sweetness from Virginias? I can tell which way it might go from reading the description.
Thanks,

Joe Ahearn

No, it's sweeter than a "real" Balkan by far (and topped gently with something akin to chocolate/cherry, very gently though). It's closer to something like "Shortcut to Mushrooms" - latakia is present but it's not spicy or challenging in any way. Not terribly strong for nicotine either. So a blend that will appeal to someone transitioning from aromatics into English mixtures, but I doubt a serious English afficianado would go for the Spilman too often. I like it a lot.

It's a nice, mellow English blend; pleasant and flavorful. The tin is cool too! You should like it, methinks.

I think sasquatch has it covered. It reminds me of some of the OTC's from back in the day. I also liked Distinguished Gentleman; another blend from Spilman that harkens back to yesteryear. I think both are pleasent. They won't give you a wow moment but a nice comfy smoke.

This is a re-introduction of an older blend. It is an American English, as mentioned above, since it's got lots of burley. It's not bad stuff. I would definitely not consider it a full English though. Nightcap is - Penzance is - and many others - but not Spilman's.

I've smoked it. It's ok but not enough for me to keep any around. I much prefer Boswell's Northwoods, FMOTT, and Frog Morton's Cellar. Pipes and Cigars also have some superior blends, like Larry's Blend (full Latakia blend) and Distinguished Penguin (Scottish Latakia mixture).
