Dave,I used both. The shank was stained with the powder--bright yellow Golden Oak, the bowl was stained with Fiebing Med. Brown.Did you use the dye mix or Fiebings on the last pipe you made? The coloring on that pipe is great.
http://pipesmagazine.com/members/chasingembers/album/picture/15414Chasingembers do you use it for blending or as a straight color?
One of my first. Made that one for my wife, and the only requirement she gave me was that it had to be blue. Went with USMC Black for the grain before applying the blue. Really an interesting color to work with.Did you make that or is it a refurbish?
The guy that pipe was made for is 79 years old and has been smoking a pipe for almost 60 years. I've made four pipes for him, all straight billiards with large buttons--and-- a slight bend in the stems. The stem in this pipe was bent after I took that picture. He says that the combination of the large button and the bend make it easier for him to clench with his dentures. He wants more pipes.@ejames- I have a similarly shaped/sized billiard as that one, and I almost didn't buy it because of the big-ass button. Oddly, it works wonderfully on that particular pipe. Wierd, huh?
