Hi,
I recently came across a Dunhill Group 4 Pot with sand blasted bowl and silver ring with a puzzling marking on it. It appears to have the wrong model number stamped on the bottom. On the bottom of the bowl it has the number 0119 stamped on it. This makes no sense because that does not correpsond to a group 4 pot.

Any idea what that number means / relevance? I can't imagine that they would have stamped the wrong number on it. Maybe it means something else...??? I am puzzled by this.

thanks
Matt

I think it is a quaint (not a standard shape). In those pipes, the group number is circled, as in yours, and not at the beginning of the model number.
I only have one, and it does not have any model number, just the circled group number.
Hope this helps, I am not an expert.

It did occur to me that it may be a quaint, but it appears to be a fairly standard pot and if it were a quaint it would not have a number on it I would think. My conclusion was that it probably is not a quaint. Perhaps it is and the number indicates something else? Still has me scratching my head.

To see if it's a quaint I would need to see a photograph of the bowl. the encircled 4 indicates that it is a group 4. Doesn't need to be part of the model number. The "R" refers to the finish, root briar, and after a bit of a search see that it is also applied to a quaint. The F/T refers to the shape of the stem - fan tail. The four digit model number doesn't fit with a pot, which is odd. Date, to the extent that I can make it out, looks like 2001.
Please put up an image of the entire pipe.

In case you need click bait, this thread suggests that what you might have is a white spot collection based on original shapes from the 20s.

So R F/T means fishtail pot.

The 0119 refers to the pipe’s number in that collection, I.e the 119th pipe produced.

Whether this is the case or not, I have no idea. Just regurgitating what is written there.

When I looked at the thread I thought that the mystery was solved, But the collection was stamped "The White Spot", not dunhill in an oval.

Oy, Dunhill nomenclature gives me a headache. Even Loring got confused from time to time.

Yeah I saw that too..but wondered if it had slipped out earlier along the same lines.

Did you ever find out what tooth paste the barling’s used?

Nope, never did.
Another reason for me to stick with Barling. They didn't crap up their pipes with a ton of mysterious inconsistent nomenclature. Barling crapped up their pipes with minimal mysterious inconsistent nomenclature.

The R is the letter code for a Pot 4sure.Screenshot 2025-03-16 at 10.29.11 PM.png

Looks similar to this one, it's probably a "collector" model, got a photo of the top of the band to confirm?

Looks to be the same style markings as the one from Smoking Pipes, although that doesn't fully answer the question, my guess is with the oval logo it's just older, the stamp looks to be 01 on yours, so 2001 vs the 2021:
