I just came into some unexpected funds and since I've never owned a Dunhill I thought I would get your thoughts on this guy.

I like it. It's a good lookin' Group 5 and I'm a big fan of the Dunhill Shells. I'd get it if you've been after a Dunnie for a long time.

Hmmm....
It doesn't jump out at me to make me want to drop $400 for it or whatever they're asking.
But it's a nice looking pipe.
I would be looking for more of a contrast or more complimentary stem color. I don't like the black on dark brown combo. Maybe if the pipe were more of a dark red.
I don't doubt it is a good pipe, but my personal tastes require me to give it a thumbs down for a first dunhill.
But if she sings to you, then fart on what I say.
She's yours.

Love the shells too :) I would get it if it suit your taste and looks as if it'll feel good in your hand. No need to worry about smoking quality.... It's always good :)

Want an large Dunhill billiard myself!

Yeah. I saw that you were after a Group 6 Dunnie. Ever find anything that tickled your fancy, Wazny?

It's not a bad looking pipe, even though I usually don't go for rusticated finishes. My two cents: I wouldn't buy it unless it "sings" to you. If you gotta have it, then grab it. If you need to think about it, maybe keep looking for one that you can't live without.
I am just starting out, and since I cannot afford much, I only want a pipe that I am truly enamored with... If I have only 4-5 pipes in a years time, I want to enjoy them equally. So personally, I am taking my time, trying to make no mistakes.

I've seen Dunhill Shell Bulldogs before and they've all had the bead around the bowl. Just curious why this one doesn't have one.
Anyway, I think she's a beaut! Yes, Dunhills are expensive but many of us consider them well worth the price.
A minor point, numbersix... the shell finish is sandblasted, not rusticated.

Not bent enough and too rusticated, get a smooth Oom Paul Dunhill and it better be a birh year pipe for those dollars

Seriously though, asking us what you should get is not so good, these Dunhills are all about buying top worksmanship and getting an art piece. Get what looks good to you 8)

It's not my thing but the important thing is if you love it. Like numbersix said, if you love it, get it. If it isn't your perfect pipe, keep looking.

If it were my money I would not spend 400.00 on a Dunhill. I think you can get a much better smoking pipes for a lot less. If you would like some suggestions, I would be happy to help.

It is a very nice pipe. If it is a group 5 pipe it is even nicer. If it is only $400 and new it is a good price. I wouldn't
hesitate to buy it.

That is a very handsome shape and finish, classically British. If you lust after a Dunhill, nothing else will probably work. That is jumping in with both feet. Let us know what you decide.

For some unknown reason when I think Dunhill I think billiard pipe. This is the one I got just a few weeks back-a size 3103. smokes wonderfully but if I get another it will be a size 5 or 6. I'd love a Upshall in that size as well and think they're every bit as good.

thanks guys.. I'm a big guy, old, bald with a fat round face. I tend to lean towards bigger... bulldogs, rhodesians, cherrywoods and pokers. I was gifted a couple of nice 'dress' style billiards from my FIL and they just ain't me. I'm also eyeballing this guy.

I read in another post about Dunhills a guy was limiting himself to a rotation of 12 great pipes and I think I'll work towards the same. If I could get a rotation of 12 blasted mostly black pipes I think I would stand pat or at least make it one out to bring one in. (cobs excluded)

You can get a big fat Ardor that will smoke circles around the Dunhill, I have a 1961 ODA shell paneled Dunhill and the Ardor for 2 to 3 hundred dollars will be a better smoke I have a large Ardor Rhodesion that smokes circles around my Dunhill, but if it's name you want go for it, the Dunhill guys that are really in to it won"t touch anything made after 1967, seems they changed the way they made pipes after that, I don"t know about that, the 3 I have are 1944 root briar smooth, 1961 shell ODA , 1963 shell, so I don"t have a newer one to compare it to, IMHO estates are the way to go if you"re into Dunhills, but there are just as good pipes out there, Moretti makes good pipes, all hand made, Upshall, Willmer, Ashton, Charenton all good pipes, the world is your oyster, sic em. The old cajun

I very seldom post twice in the same thread but I wanted to say this..I've never been sorry that I bought any quality pipe that I really wanted. If you have the funds and it's a Dunhill that you want then get one.It will give you a lifetime of smoking pleasure and you will always be glad you have it.

The last time I made a comment on Dunhill the guy starts crying and never came back . But get a Wessex bulldog and spend the other 300 on tobacco . And there you have it one man's opinion.

Dunhill are excellent pipes. However, you're paying a high price just for the name.
