I've read that Dunhill pipes are classified with numbers and that some are more rare/desirable than others. Can anyone provide information on what it all means?
I've also heard pipe bowls referred to by group numbers. Is this part of Dunhill's system? How can someone new to these discussions get a feel for the sizes being discussed?
Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum
Cup o joes has an excellent video on dunhill sizes and they advertise on the forum
Dunhills sizes from group 2 thru group 6 are most common and are frequently used to describe sizes of most other pipe manufacturers

There are numerous Dunhill dating guides out there you'll want to read, here are two good ones:

Their dating system has changed over the years, so you have to be familiar with all of them.

Which took the late and lamented John C. Loring a good few years of his life. I've tried, but given up: it's simply too complicated for me so I use the same links as Al suggests .

An ample medium sized bowl is a Group 4, which is probably the most produced size pipe. It all goes up and down from there.

A group one or two is for a limited length smoke, but I have discovered they are great, not just toys or novelties as you might think.

Group 5's are big pipes, for a long smoke. Group 6 are very large, for a couple of hours worth of smoking, maybe. This isn't

good engineering, just a rough description. Group 3 is a little smaller than average, and is pleasant for Virginia tobaccos and

a shorter smoke.
