Have you ever had a tobacco that blew your socks off, order more and say to yourself "what the?"
One of our fine members was kind enough to send me a 1 oz sample of EMP that he had gotten from Smoking Pipe. I enjoyed it el' mucho and ordered a tin from Cigar and Pipe. I paced the floor till UPS showed up. The next morning I eagerly opened, smelled the tin and was a gitty as a little school girl. Then I lit it! It was not the same smoke. I was so glad I still had the original bag so I be certain I was not losing my mind.
I have now purchased a bag from Smoking Pipe that I got yesterday. Again, not the same smoke.
My question is - have any of you EMP die hards' found EMP to have changed recently? I wonder if that is the case or that the bag I first smoked was mislabeled.

My Early Morning Pipe comes in a tin and is one of my go to blends. I find that most tinned tobaccos mellow a bit several days after opening. Do the two look like the same tobacco?

Saint007. Yes the cut and the color looks the same, but that first bag had something special to it that is missing from the tin and the 2nd bag. I've only had one bowl from the second bag, but even that did not give me the WOW that I got from the first puff of my original bag of EMP.

EMP and Dunhill 965 are amazing when they've sat in the tin for a few months. Rick Newcombe famously drys out EMP on purpose -- in the tin -- over a period of months before adding new EMP to the mix. Then he lets this sit for a while. He says it doesn't even taste like the same tobacco and I bet he's right. Some of my best smokes have come from old, dried out EMP and 965. So just wait a few months and you'll have that tobacco that originally blew your socks off.

Pitchfork - I hope you are right. I have wondered how old the bag was that had been given tome.
So are you saying that Newcombe breaks the seal on the tins and lets them sit for months. I assume he puts the plastic lid back on it during this aging process.
I've bought some Sutliff Sunrise, and some Cornell & Diehl Morning Drive. Had the Sunrise this morning. Great smell in the can. The smoke was nice and mild, but again nothing special. May need to let this sit a while. Will try Morning Drive tomorrow.
Thanks for the encouraging news.

There is a blend called AM pipe and another called EMP (specifically EMP), they are only sold in bulk. They are similar blends to Early Morning Pipe by Dunhill, but Dunhill does not sell Early Morning Pipe as a bulk. I will bet good money that you got one of those two blends, instead of the original. Since it was from bulk, it would just seem likely that you got the other.
Me, I prefer the Dunhill original. But, I can see how if you preferred one of the other (like) blends, then the original Dunhill version wouldn't be what you expected. To me, the Dunhill brand has a bigger nicotine kick to it and the orientals have a tanginess that I prefer. The others just seem more like very light Balkan blends, good for what they are, but they lack the strength, IMO.

Mike - the bag is label Dunhill. Here is where the 1 oz bags came from http://www.smokingpipes.com/tobacco/by-maker/dunhill/bulk/moreinfo.cfm?Product_ID=19048

I love me some EMP. I have only tried tins from my Tobacconist and he bought almost all of his tins at least 6 years ago so most of the stuff I have (bought from him) is decently aged.
I just ran out of my EMP, gotta head down this weekend and pick up a new one :)

Me too
I had no idea that it is available in bulk. Will order some on my next TAD. That's what I get for only looking and buying Stokkebye, Lane and 4Noggins bulk.

Harold I saw you mentioned some EMP "matches". I tried H&H's Daybreak on a lark. It's mild and pretty tasty on it's own, but it isn't as rich and full as EMP is.
I don't think Daybreak is bad at all, just not something I'd stockpile.
It's not meant to be a match, but have you tried Lane's Leo? I'm always shilling for it, but it's the one Oriental style English I always find myself coming back too.
(Although now that it's been open for over a month, I'm really starting to find myself like Rattray's Red Rapparee. Took me quite a few bowls to get into it.)

JAH76 - Question for you. When you "age" your baccy what do you do? I assume there are different steps if the package is a tin or in a zip lock bag.
Talking with other it may be an aging thing that is needed here. So your help on how best to do so is appreciated.

Cellaring: I put my bulk in mason jars. There's a bunch of different methods, but I just boil my jars, put the tobacco in while the jar is hot and seal it up.

Tins, I just leave in the sleeves, unless they're Sutliff cans. They are made of cardboard. It's best to put them in jars.
Then I put the jars and tins in styrofoam coolers and stack them in my pantry. Although, I now have twelve coolers full, so I will be looking for a new place to store them before I start canning veggies from the garden this year.
There is much debate on how long to age. Me, I'm going to wait till a jar has at least two years on it before I ever crack one. But, some I will just leave until my taste buds start to call them.

I have recently finished a tin of EMP and bought some bulk from SP. Both were identical in look, smell, and taste. The only thing I can think of is that the first sample you got had a bit of age on it. I have read that EMP aged, as well as 965 and Night Cap, are outstanding tobaccos.

It's also possible that your donor gifted you some older EMP blended by Murrays. Just a guess.
but Dunhill does not sell Early Morning Pipe as a bulk
Dunhill does indeed sell EMP in bulk, $60 a pound at SP.

Harold I'm pretty much the same as Cosmic but I dont boil my jars, just soap and water. I do use new lids each time. The oldest thing I've got in my cellar is only two years old though.
I wouldn't trust any cardboard tins.
Let me know if you want to try some Leo. I'd be glad to send you some.

Thanks guys for the info. I understand that there are various methods and I'm going to do a little study and reading from this great forum - then my own trial and error. At this time I don't have enough tobacco or money to stock pile, so I won't be going two years on anything.
Cosmic, sounds like you are in need of space. I have room for your stock pile here in Florida. Happy to take your over flow off your hands!!!"~)

Ha ha, thanks haroldt! I'll keep that in mind.
Me, I converted a nearly $350 a month cigarette addiction into my pipe hobby when I quit the cigs. So, budgeting in that much pipe tobacco a month is helping me quickly build a good cellar of aged tobaccos. As the they say, tobacco will not get any cheaper.

but Dunhill does not sell Early Morning Pipe as a bulk
A question to the EMP experts.
Does Dunhill sell EMP in bulk or not?
I have a pound bought in bulk, and I just assumed it was the original from Dunhill, not a substitute.
