Wife went to the store today. Road crew working to make driveway approaches, when they were close to ours wife filled a large basket with snacks and cokes, walking the highway giving out snacks, some only took one wife chided them take more, there’s more in the house. I believe it was the first time they had been treated like that. My wife said in the fifties when highway crew was working her Grandmother made her bring coffee and treats in a tray to the workers. Not enough civility in this world. My wife is an angel!

On the hottest summer days my mom would give each of the garbage men a bottle of cold beer. They would sit in the shade and take a break for 15 minutes enjoying a cold one. That wouldn't fly these days !
Now there’d be smartphone and Ring videos from multiple angles, vitriol and outrage, videos trending on TMZ and YouTube, people demanding firings and prosecution… Heaven forbid they fired up a few nails while they downed their beers. ?

Back when I was a kid, after work a number of the neighborhood men would meander over to someone’s garage drink a few beers and shoot the breeze. Not every night, but occasionally. That was the forum back then.

Wouldn't that make your day, out there setting up cones, nailing up forms, pouring concrete, thinking it was hours until the next beverage and snack, except for some warm water in the truck. I bet those were some of the best snacks those guys had had all year.

They came and "paved" our dirt road the summer when I was 10. (put down roadbond). My grandma made a big spread of sandwiches and such and the road crew came and had lunch on the covered porch with us. I had been bumming Redman off a bulldozer driver named Tommy, and decided he was my buddy. I kept trying to figure out how grandma knew Tommy and why we were all having lunch together. Turns out it was just hospitality.

Spain - Europe
Beautiful story. There are good people in this world, and we are lucky to have them around. Thank you brother, it touched my heart. I remember on a work trip with my father in his truck, I was only 12 years old. We stayed in a small netherlands Dutch town for the whole weekend. Until Monday we could not load again to start the return to Spain. We were in a neighborhood, bored in the truck, a lady handed us cold cokes, chips and cake they were celebrating a birthday in their backyard. It was beautiful, to see that happy lady making that gesture. My father did not hesitate for a moment, and took out the fruit and vegetables that were in the refrigerated box, and gave her several boxes of fruit and vegetables. The woman was even happier. I have been back many times all over Europe, when I worked as a truck driver, and I have met lovely people, who in hard times away from home, they gave you warmth and friendship.
