It’s embarrassing but when I smoke my mouth produces more saliva. I am avoiding spitting because even though I am outside I may not be one day. I manage it ok but would much prefer a dryer mouth. If I use a rubber tip cover the saliva gets underneath it. I feel like I am adding moisture down the tip/bit/stem.

Anyone else have this issue and have you found any remedy?

I'm not sure what you could do other than swallow the saliva. I've found when I use the tips on the stems, it makes me salivate more. I don't want to clench my pipes and make teeth marks on the stems, but, it'd be nice if I could smoke a pipe while drawing or designing on the computer. I may just use my cobs, which I'm less precious about to clench and smoke while I work.

Breathing through your mouth, puffing actively? Just stabs in the dark. If I have more saliva and I'm outside I spit it out, and don't feel like I have to train myself otherwise, but that's me. Could be flavor or something else is stimulating your taste buds, maybe breathing more through your nose and taking it easy is a solution, maybe it is a short term thing. LOL, just typing this and thinking about smoking a pipe and flavor just stimulated my mouth! I doubt you are sending moisture down the stem.

I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Every single one of us has had this issue. Time and smoking slower (i.e. sipping) are two things that help, but time is the biggest. Your body just isn't used to smoking yet and is protecting it's self from something it's not sure about. Also good call on not spitting it. Spitting makes you produce more. Where as swallowing the spit is totally harmless to you and doesn't trigger the salivary response. Basically it should calm down with time.

Do you drool while smoking every pipe? The reason I ask is that I have a Medico Cavalier and when I smoke it, I drool like a fool. I feel like I need a bucket under my chin like that Monty Python movie. It's horrible. I think it's because the bit of the stem is more narrow than what I'm used to. Most of my pipes have a wider bit. I don't smoke the Medico anymore.

Also the hole/airway in the bit is much smaller than any of my other pipes.

Just a thought.

The mouthfeel of the rubber tips is uncomfortable. I've been using non-adhesive tape to protect the stem with decent results (a tip I picked up here and the tape is available on Amazon for about $7a roll).

Smoke has no impact on my saliva. It's not like food, which kicks off the salivation to aid digestion. I think you droolers are weirdos. Do your knuckles also drag the floor? Do you breathe with your mouth open? puffy
LOL - i wish - I am one of those people who has super senses - no shit. I have heightened senses of smell, taste and hearing. In ways it is a curse. I can hear a pin drop. I can smell cigarette smoke of vehicles in front of me on the freeway and more and more these days i smell weed when driving. the smell makes me nauseous. When we are on walk in the woods I smell so much it's wonderful. On many instances I say to my wife, "do you smell that pine, that earth, that honeysuckle etc and she is like "no". I have exceptional wine tasting senses as well and should have gone into that industry but alas I chose chemistry. Anyway, this is an awesome gift but it cuts both ways as subtle flavors can be overpowering. I like to think of myself of the next step on evolutions path rather than a knuckle dragger. But I'll own it either way ;-)

It's like you're describing me also. When out hunting, my grandfather was always amazed that I could smell game before we saw it. Being a super taster, there are also some foods that are just too overpowering for me, like hot peppers or carrots. But, I'm not sure why this would make someone salivate when they smoke.

I am average taste/smeller (I think?). But until age 50 I had 20/10 vision in both eyes. Most people think 20/20 is the best. It’s not. My first job out of college was with Texas Instruments. They gave me a deep dive eye exam because of the job I would be doing. The lady giving me test said I was first person she had seen in her 23 years that scored 100%. I can (could) read road signs before others even saw the sign ahead. It’s great but my eyes are very sensitive to light. I squinted most of my childhood from light sensitivity and now I look like I am a mean frowning old man.
