Long story short, pipes are very expensive in Kuala Lumpur and pipe tobacco is ridiculously cheap. I picked up some Peterson Holiday 2011, Navy Flake and pouches of 7 Seas Gold and Royal. When it came to a pipe (I'm going to buy one in each port we hit) a Peterson Aran Bulldog was about $140 after conversion. WAY too much. So I picked out a good looking Dr. Plumb for about $60, cleaned it up a bit and loaded a bowl of Gold. Almost immediately after lighting up, I pull it out of my mouth and it's already oxidized! Probably 30 seconds in contact with my mouth and it was already brown-ish with little bits of white where I was clenching. Anyone know why this would happen? I had a few drinks before I lit up, but I smoked my Wellington while I was drinking and it wasn't affected. It's really bugging me because it's a good looking pipe but I'm not going to smoke it much if I have to buff the bit after every smoke.

No, it was new - but it was sitting in the window for a while, was a bit dusty and I think it still had a bit of wood stuck in the shank from drilling. Not the greatest QA, I think, but it was drilled right to the bottom of the bowl, dead center. I don't understand why it would oxidize like that.
