Ok, so here is one of my estate pipes that I did not care for how it looked so changed it around. Mainly just sanded down the white on it, re-stained it with some diluted brown, sanded/polished it, then cleaned up the stem. Still don't care for this shape but it's much better.

There actually are some fills. But with the grain and the stain they don't distract from the look at all. That's what I've noticed on pipes with dark varnishes on them. Usually with a good stain and sanding the fills don't take away from the pipe and the grain really makes the pipe stand out. That's the second one I've done this too and both of them look better then with the paint/varnish.
