So I’m relatively new to pipe smoking. Just posted my new member introduction, and feel very welcomed by the way Figured I’d go ahead and throw out my first post I’ve been thinking about for awhile.

I’ve been trying out new tobaccos, and I wanted to try and strike a balance between aromatic and non-aromatic. I don’t smoke in the house, and it’s been fairly chilly here during the past few weeks.

I found myself sitting in the garage when it warmed up enough to squeeze in a smoke. Given that my time has been limited, and I was having trouble choosing a tobacco to focus on, I have found myself regularly packing two pipes for each session. Usually it’s an aromatic and a non-aromatic. I end up smoking half a bowl of one, and then setting it down to smoke half the other. Then swapping back. I have to say it’s been really cool to have the experience of going back and forth. The contrast seems to really accentuate the flavors, and highlight the overall experience of the differences between the two tobaccos.

Just wondering if anyone else has done this, or if anyone has any thoughts on the practice.

"...One bowl is already more time than I usually have.”

That's a good point. I should probably clarify that I don’t usually end up finishing both bowls. I will either come back to them later or sometimes just not finish them.

I've not smoked two pipes back and forth like that, but I recently smoked some C&D Pegasus right after a small Ashton Esquire cigar and found the contrast to noticeably alter how I tasted the pipe tobacco. It tasted much sweeter than it normally does after the drier, more bitter flavors of the cigar

Now my head is spinning! ? Do you own that?

No. I saw one on Ebay and there was a thread about it here where i found the picture. Your post reminded me about it. I have no idea if one could be found today

Hmmm, that's an interesting approach, and in all the time I've been on Forums, I don't think anyone has mentioned smoking two pipes intermittently like that, so A+ for originality. I like variety a lot and often smoke an aromatic and a non-aromatic in a row, if not in that order. The reason I haven't done it the way you suggest, more or less at once, is that it kind of adds a multi-tasking dimension. I do a lot of that in the rest of my life, and since I am a sort of one channel hyper-focused type, it rubs me wrong. I don't want another efficiency added to what is supposed to be an activity aimed at leisure and relaxation. I think people through their thirties or forties, tend to do this -- some sort of work project or chore, music, phone calls and eating all at once or in rapid rotation. People after a certain age become less adept but do some of this anyway. Even when young, I think taking things one at a time, at least part of the time, works better. Studies seem to back this approach.

I do like cigars. I can see how it would be similar

I have medium hands. But I doubt even largest chamber pipe I have will fit my hand. Even using most wet blend.

Good idea for comparing multiple blends.

I used to do this all the time when I first started out. I think it's a great way to do A/B comparisons of different tobaccos and learn the subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) differences.

Very cool to hear you had a good experience with this!
