Hey guys, still pretty new to pipe smoking, and decided to try Orlik Golden Sliced, because of the consistent rave reviews I've seen. After about my 5th bowl with it, I can confidently say....I really don't like it. Which I realize means I must be crazy. But I found it to be too....I don't know...strong, bitey. Is this a higher nicotine tobacco, or is do Vaper blends tend to be stronger?

Makes 2 of us... I also tried it because of all the reviews, I think I just don't VA or Va/per blends yet, to me it taste like hay??

It really depends on Vapers being stronger, but I would say yes all things considered. Perique adds spice and ramps the strength of the blend up. But, there are mild Vapers out there.
You are not alone on the OGS. I find it to mild for my tastes. Aging it will help reduce the bite, imo. Try Best Brown flake, Bright CR or Glengarry Flake if you would like something tasty.

No...You are not crazy, You simply don't like it. Everyone here has different tastes for different things. Some of us like the same things, and some of us don't. However...as time goes on, I have found out that some tobaccos that I didnt like previously, I can enjoy them now.
I'm not big fan either. I bought a tin a few months ago and smoked a few bowls. WAY to mild for my tastes. That being said, I've got half the tin aging and gave the other half to my neighbor. He enjoys it more than I do, though. At least know I know enough to not just buy anything with good reviews, but to inspect the reviews and to buy things that I think will actually match what I like to smoke.
You're not crazy. OGS nips me ( that is a tingling of the mouth, not quite a bite ) no matter how slow I smoke it. Might be a body chemistry thing.

It is not a "wow" tobacco and it isn't much of a Va/per either. The perique percentage is so small that you may not even be able to notice it without being told in advance. A translation error had it listed as a Va/bur for years and nobody was the wiser...
It is great for what it is, a light golden Virginia flake - the mildness and "hay" notes are definitely part and parcel of that experience. The price is also top notch.
With that said, it's not for everybody and only you can tell what you enjoy!

bcirka - I'm pretty new to pipe smoking as well and I tried Orlik (as a VA) and Solani Aged Burley Flake (as a burley) and discovered pretty quickly how bland and tasteless I found those blends, despite rave reviews. Maybe try something with a much bolder flavour, like something with latakia.
OGS isn't bad but I really prefer Escudo. It's a coin cut and IMO much tastier. The tanginess that you taste is just the acidy Virginia. Throw it in a mason jar for a few months and try it again.
Not everyone likes everything. VaPers don't float my boat at all. It doesn't matter if 1,000 other people think it is great stuff - every blend will not work for everyone.

I didn't like it either, my two VA's that I love to death are PS Luxery Bullseye Flake and H&H's Anniversary Kake. They are quite yummy. I also like McClelland's #24 a lot. I got my OGS in a jar aging, gonna try it at the 3 month mark comming up soon and see if I like it any better.
Had a tin of OGS in the cellar to try but hadn't gotten around to it. I'm an aro smoker most days. Read this thread and decided to give it a try. I'm a fairly novice smoker but I'm about 15 minutes into this bowl and I can definitely see how it wouldn't agree with everyone. It's an enjoyable smoke but I wouldn't want it more than maybe once every few weeks. My mouth immediately experienced an unpleasant tingle upon lighting up. I'm sipping very slowly in fear of what my mouth is going to feel like tomorrow. I'm enjoying the flavor and room note though. I think this will be going into a mason jar for a few months in hopes to tone down the aggressiveness I'm experiencing.
EDIT: I should add that I rubbed the flake out and am smoking it in my Peterson system egg, the smallest bowl I own. Good for quick smokes (or ones I'm not sure if I'm going to enjoy). Straight out of the tin with no drying time.
