After spending much time in the Q&A areas all over the internet and in these forums, debating the pros and cons of smoking, breathing, sipping, puffing; of how to prevent tongue bite, how to keep a bowl lit, etc.; I'd like to offer my humble assessment based on my own experimentation.
I've come to the conclusion that there is indeed a time for each of these techniques, no matter if some have a reputation of being problematic.
Here it is.
I puff a cold pipe.
I smoke a warm pipe.
I breath a pipe that's perfect.
I sip a pipe that's hot.
So for any newer participants who are still working on their communication with their pipe, ponder my experience and perhaps it could assist you in your quest. You may not be doing it "wrong", you may just need to be more adaptable to the momentary needs of your pipe.
Cheers.

Good info. I find that smoking a pipe involves a lot of trial and error to find best practices. Once comfortable, it becomes muscle memory with little thought, which includes packing, taping and lighting.

New here, and anyone should do what works for them!

I'm just keeping it simple and once lit just working on a nice relaxed rhythm and letting it come to me, for lack of a better term, start to finish. Trying to apply some basics and relate "issues" back to those. Less is more for me. More I spend time with the pipes, I figure things will come along.

I believe the disagreement can be summed up by a set of quotes in the Rankin Bass film "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer."

"This fog is as thick as peanut butter."
"You mean pea soup"
"You eat what you like and I'll eat what I like...AARGH!"

I barely light tobacco, just enough for a few sips, to experience the full flavors, then let it go out, cool down and repeat.

I believe the less fire you generate, also for a very brief length of time, yields the best results in experiencing all the flavors and nuances of tobacco. :)

Not meaning any harm, but its a pipe. How difficult can it be? Reminds me of the person who told me not to take up golf at 45. Two years later I was shooting in the high '70's. How hard can it be?? Most people fail from lack of commitment.
Well since it seems that nearly every new pipe smoker goes through these questions in the beginning, it must be somewhat common. Therefore in personally pondering the successes I've begun routinely having, I wondered if I could humbly offer my opinion on what others may still be searching and reading about. It is AFTER ALL, posted in the BEGINNER SECTION, dude.

Like many, I didn’t have a mentor to show me the ropes. However, like most things, trial & error is the way. The advise within here is valuable, but everyone has to figure their own way. Hopefully, with advise, a video and some patience …proper cadence in any pipe situation can be achieved. It took me a good few months to honestly be able to enjoy a bowl without thinking too hard. Best!?☕

Don't listen to these guys....... Half of them are just pulling your chain. The other half are just jaded because they forgot what it is like to fall in love with smoking a pipe but every single one of them would bend over backwards for you or most any other member.

It really can be a transcending experience and although I now have it down well enough to just stuff my pipe, I still weigh out What I am putting in it.

Your advice is sound and you are well on your way. Welcome to the club. Thick skin required. puffy

Like I stated, "not meaning any harm". However, I can see how it may have been taken as rude, so I am sorry and should have used better communication.

I to am relativily new to pipe use. I don't smoke much and have gotten tongue discomfort several times to the degree that stopped a few times.

Again, I am sorry I was rude and not respectful.

I didn't know that humbly offering my opinion in THE BEGINNER SECTION would be classified as a disagreement. It was offered to new smokers as a reflection of my interpretation of much of the advice given to new smokers.
I appreciate your post. You gotta know that the boys here, they're just cracking on ya in fun. You kinda have to roll with it and not let it get to you. Most likely they didn't notice what section it was in. I never pay attention to that myself. But, there is some good in breaking this stuff down for newbies. Thanks FLDRD.

When they joke ya, joke 'em back... or just laugh if you don't wanna mess with it. puffy

I think you misunderstood my post. Let me clarify. You posted an idea. Others came and disagreed with that idea, whether politely or a bit snarkily. I summed up the disagreement.

If you think a bit deeper, how can the post have been directed at you if you were the one posting the original idea and others were voicing some level of disagreement to said idea?
