I've come across many pipes stamped "Imported Briar", which implies the pipe has been made or turned in a location separate from where the briar was grown. But are there any pipes made from domestically sourced briar stamped as such? I've never found a pipe marked "Domestic Briar" or anything like that.

For example, a Greek pipe marked "Greek Briar" or something similar.

Just a random Sunday thought!

I've only seen it on U.S. factory makes. None of my Italian, Danish, etc. have it. Maybe a U.S. customs issue or perhaps a marketing gimmick?

Stampings on my no names, and others include Algerian Briar , Red Root , Imported Briar...all identifying the type or origin of heath root briar, all which grows in Mediterranean countries
...any of mine marked Algerian Briar seem to be good smokers....I am sure this was for marketing. Imported briar markings, probably the same....while red root refers probably to desired sub species...like "red maple", red oak, etc.
I have read that older briar smokes better...anyone concur?
also, the finish used on the outside, engineering of the pipe, etc....

I personally know that in my mis-mosh pipe collection, there are some that are better than others....
honestly can't say why....rest them ,clean them occasionally, scrape out extra cake....enjoy!!!

Simply marketing, and "proof" if you will that the pipe is briar and not pear or apple or maple or strawberry tree or whatever else. "Oooooh honey, look, this one's imported briar!" as if there is some other kind (briar being native to the mediterranean area and nowhere else).
