What happens when you have a library at home, with thousands of books? I love literature, books on history, philosophy, anthropology, politics. I understand the sadness of the narrator of the story. When you love something, you can't stop thinking about getting it. The woman's conversation reminds me a lot of my wife. Although I am very lucky to have a woman who enjoys my library, and my modest collection of pipes.

My marriage lasted 49 years (my wife passed last summer) because neither of us hid how much we spent on "luxury" items and we always set a limit on how much we would spend on gifts. About third of my pipes are ones which she had bought me new for birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas, etc. It's a little hard to hide the price of pipes when the wife goes buy them.

I don't know what that pipe cost, but I think any pipe that I need a payment plan for would be out of my budget.

That said, my wife only knows the value of the two pipes she bought for me and both are the most expensive I own, around $150.

On a related note, I am personally, vehemently against pipe racks and pipe displays. When I started out on this journey, I was looking at a vintage Decatur Pipe cabinet for a modest $70 that displayed 14 pipes. At that time I owned three or four pipes and my wife told me to get it, but then I heard her voice in my head, "When did that fill up?" That's when I knew my pipes would be kept in a felt lined drawer out of sight.

This is interesting and relatable to me.
I keep my pipes hidden from my daughter. As far as I know, she has no idea I smoke a pipe. I could be wrong.
I have massive TAD and virtually no PAD and I wonder if that’s because my pipes are stored out of sight? Your take on filling up a rack made sense to me.
Not only “when did that fill up” but also, “I guess I need a new rack to fill”.
I’d be curious about the relationship between prominence and method of pipe display/storage and frequency of pipe purchases among forum members.

My SO is the one who buys me most of my pipes. I'm too miserly to spend $150 on a pipe so she does hahaha. But I'm more of a tobacco guy anyway so I spend more on the things I smoke. My pipe collection is fairly circumspect. I have about 15. 2/3rds are basket pipes. I have a few cobs and two meers. I have a few Petersons a few Nordings. The fanciest pipe I have is a Boswell freehand. She took me to Boswell's and got it for me. I don't think I have a pipe worth more than $180. Most are less than $50. The only blend she complains about as far as the smell is concerned is Pirate Kake haha. I seldom smoke it anyway. She is a keeper. There certainly are many I want, but, as I said, I probably won't buy them. What I really wish I had is one of those Eldritch pipes. Someday when I have money....

No relation. Pipes are small.

I’ve kept my pipeweeding habits away from my elementary-school-aged children. My unsmoked pipes are in my bedroom closet. My smoking pipes are in my pipe drawer in my garage. My pipe collection at my dad’s grew from 1 to more than 1. This hobby doesn’t abide space constraints.
