I only post this because ranger said he search for this topic and couldn't find the answer. If you want to find a post here I have found it best to google the topic and then pick the result that came from this site. I find relevant threads here best that way. Don't ask me why.
This is an important topic like most questions posted here, and as a newby I have seen it come up three times or more in two months. Obviously I am not complaining in the slightest, because I still read them, and even though it is posted a lot SOMETHING good and new ALWAYS comes up.
I also add that when I google a pipe smoking topic it is with the express intent of finding the answer that is here. There is no better place to go. IMO
To restate I am not being negative in talking about the duplicate post, just offering fellow newbies a way to find the info they come here looking for.

Here's my take on this: I bought several new pipes all at once from a good friend one weekend. I wanted to smoke one as soon as I got home. The bowl was lined with red clay and was quite dusty. I wiped it out with a damp paper towel and let it dry a few mins. Packed it up, lit it and was immediatley greeted with a burnt wood/earth taste and it dried out my mouth and throat. I stopped smoking it and removed the tobacco, cleaned the bowl and lined it with a thin coat of honey. I had a similar eperience with a Brigham pipe and I will never smoke a pipe with a 'nude' bowl again.
