In the short time that I have been smoking a pipe, C&D Night Train has been a regular in my rotation. Every time I smoke that blend, I experience something new. This morning, I smoked it in my cobbit and found the sweetness of this blend really showing through. My question for the group is: Does Night Train have a casing? If not, is it simply the Virginias? What am I tasting here?

It most definitely has a topping of some kind.
Interesting. I never would have thought topping. Casing, yeah, but I guess I still need to learn more about casings vs. toppings. When I think toppings, I think Visions of Celephais (sp?) or Madfiddler. Maybe I am getting them mixed up. Or, maybe I need to learn more about light vs. strong toppings. Back to the search bar for me.

From what I've gathered, the term "case" originally referred to the moisture level of the tobacco. It was "in case" if it was at the right level for transport. Then "casing" meant whatever was done to put it (and then keep it) at the right moisture. As mentioned, that's also a good time to tweak the flavor profile with other stuff, so it's kind of a blurry line. I tend to use "topping" when an obvious flavor has been added, but I suppose that's most accurate when it refers to the final stages of blending.

Here is a follow-up question for the more experienced in the group: When Jeremy Reeves talks about Canadian Virginias having a higher sugar content, how does that translate to the sweetness if the tobacco alone? Is it like smoking a cased tobacco. I guess I could test that myself by purchasing from leafonly, but this is easier/lazier.
