I have a big glass jar, a nice thing with rips running up the sides. It narrows on the bottom and becomes somewhat bulbus at the top with a glass lid and a knob at the top. But inside I have, filled to the brim, dottle which I've been collecting. I'll post a picture sometime to show you exactly what I mean, but in the meantime, I've bought a second jar, similar in design, and have begun to fill it. It took me about a year to fill the first jar.

Does anyone else do this?

I'm curious if you're planning on smoking the dottle. Personally, I wouldn't.

I don't have much dottle to speak of. I tend to fill the very bottom of the bowl with some cheap, less desirable tobacco to act as sacrificial dottle so I don't waste any of my more expensive blend. It does a good job of soaking up the moisture. It gets tossed out, and none of my more expensive baccy is wasted.

There was a TV show in Oz called “Collectors” where people came on to show off their “collections”
One bloke came along with half a lifetime worth of belly-button fluff in several glass jars.
Do you sense a commonality with him ?

Omg, long ago I had a woman who collected and saved my navel fluff. Possibly TMI there.

Dottle collecting, a variation on Holmes' Persian Slipper. While I can't see the ornamental value, it should make an interesting smoke, sort of a "Dead Pensioners Mix". I thoroughly approve of this practice.

Nope. If you want to save tobacco do like earlier stated and use cheap boring tobacco in the bottom. A pinch will do.

What I do is use Meer chips on pipes (most of them) which have taper at the bottom. It only takes about 4-6 chips to make the surface flatter. I literally end up with ash and a few strands of half burnt tobacco. It also helps protect the airway from getting too hot from a flame. All that said, I dont nuke the bottom of the pipe to get every strand. Its not good for them.

I dont know if tobacco is expensive or hard to get in Japan but it does take some effort for me to obtain good stuff so I dont want to toss out a chunk with every pipe.

only psychopaths. For example there was this one guy back in the day who wore a deerstalker and talked about grade school a lot with his doctor Watson, that guy put it in a slipper and left it over his fireplace. Sharp dude but a little weird.
Yeah people do that and generally find mixed results if I remember correctly.

I have collected it in the past, and sieved out the ash - it wasn't a bad smoke. But lately I can't be bothered to do it. My supply of tobacco vastly outweighs the rate that I smoke it.

This gave me a good laugh, and my girlfriend, too. She's obsessed with naval lint, although doesn't collect it as for as I know.

About saving dottle, it's not for re-smoking. Seems a lot of folks thought that's what I meant. I noticed when I smoke a bowl too far down, and end up smoking the dottle, it irritates my throat.

I usually don't have dottle, but if I do it gets thrown out onto the back yard.
Yes, this! I'm a gardener so I throw it in my compost bin... that along with the half-drunk beers I end up leaving on my night stand. I tell myself that since they are nourishing my veggie patch it means I'm not really wasteful... however my bank account differs in that assessment... 😂

The moderator here when I first joined was Lawrence, a very eccentric gentleman that I have had the pleasure of meeting at The Briary several times. But, he was rather famous on here for smoking dottle. Somehow, he managed to smoke more dottle than he was making with fresh bowls.

I’ve smoked dottle. The moisture is from combustion (for those of us who don’t drool down the stem). But, I don’t smoke it as a matter of practice, nor do I keep it, ha ha.

I bet that jar smells… interesting. puffy

Saving pipe dottle, blimey that’s really taking recycling very seriously🧐

I do have a relative by marriage whose parents both pipe smokers saved pipe dottle and applied it warm externally to their throats and chests as they swore it was better than a well known vapour rub for colds and sore throats. My relative hasn’t followed through with the practice but as his parents both lived into their nineties perhaps there’s more to the medicinal benefits of pipe dottle than might be imagined. I’ll pass on it and stick with that vapour rub and my annual anti influenza inoculation thank you. My grandparents both Victorians by birth and subsequent nature used Sloans ‘Horse‘ Liniment as my grandfather would call it for every ailment to dogs and humans under the sun regardless of what it said on the bottle which in the 1950/60’s must have dated from the 1920’s and had survived being bombed out of London in 1940, shelf life not being a thing then.
