Greg Pease's February article is about what Fred Hanna calls a "magic pipe", but it is even better than that. The intro is pretty funny, and the way the pipe came to Greg is intriguing as well. Then add to that which pipe it actually is let alone how it smokes. Check out this fun and interesting article here.

I do! My first Jesse Jones commission, a 2015 1/8 bent, oval shank, tan blast Brandy with a cumberland stem. I’ve never found a blend that doesn’t smoke well in this pipe, and every blend tastes better in it! I had him make me two others, same shape, same size, different only in color. They, too, are fantastic smokers, but neither they, nor any other pipe, reaches the level of the first!IMG_0898.jpegIMG_0793.jpeg

Been married twice and retain very friendly and close relationships with both Ex's, so yeah, I have a magic pipe.

Oh, sorry, you meant magic TOBACCO pipe. Yeah, I have several of those and have discussed the topic with Fred. You never know where you will find one. It's not a matter of paying big $$ on a high grade famous maker pipe. It could be a basket pipe, or in my case, a mid range Brebbia that I picked up on eBay for $2. But you won't know unless you have technique sufficient to bring out what the pipe offers.

I enjoy my entire rotation thoroughly, but the first "magic" pipe is a Ser Jacopo Jucunda Sandblasted Bent Billiard. The draw is excellent, and it is very easy to keep lit and smoke slowly with no effort whatsoever. My Savinelli 311KS is a close second. I would like to eventually get a similar pot shape with no filter chamber. Currently sitting on "only" 12 pipes, not counting a few random cobs and clays. From here out, I will likely add sparingly, but of the 11, two of them are 311KS models. My next addition will be a Meerschaum after I research thoroughly.

Even after all these years, it’s still unfathomable to me that one pipe can deliver a really good smoke, while another can transcend. Beyond purity of taste, there’s some sort of fascinating interplay, an inexplicable synergy between certain tobaccos and briars that transforms the smoking experience into something more, something sublime.

I own a few magical pipes, not many.

The first one, is a Grabow that Marie White found behind the counter of her dead father’s cabinet that she found when she had it moved about 1990 to clean, at the Lead Mine General Store.

IMG_1388.jpeg

The best Grabows, the ten dollar ones, she remembered her Daddy set out on top of the display. It must have fallen behind the cabinet.

Marie White taught school with my mother at Wheatland, and she always inquired as to her health and well being.

I was married to a daughter of the wealthiest banker in Southwest Missouri who bought a ranch on the Little Niangua with a mile and a half of river frontage. Lead Mine was the closet store.

Marie found the pipe, and saved it for me. The charge was $9.95 and tax, as the sticker was marked.

I guess I can say now, that day she asked me, if I minded answering a legal question, and of course I didn’t mind at all.

She asked if it might be possible for a lady in her late fifties, but in good health, to adopt a child.

I said that children to adopt were scarce, and the preference was first to a married couple.

A decade later my first wife and I agreed to disagree and we divorced, and I lost track of Marie and the Lead Mine store. When I went back, the Amish owned it.

I asked the Amish there, what became of Marie White, and they said she got married, and sold them the old store.

Then when my mother was dying of heart failure and sometimes mistook me for my father, she said Bruce, don’t you wish we could go again soon to Lead Mine, along with Malvern and Ugene? They always have such a good band playing.

Maybe I’ll sing Jealous Heart again for you, and she giggled.

Then she looked up and said, I thought you were Bruce for a minute.

I said Mama, he hears you, as well as I do.

I need to dig out that magic Grabow again, you know?

From the first smoke it was amazingly delicious.

I had one like that just once. Then a leaf blower outside my window woke me up, and it was gone. The closest in real life was a Radice Gigi bent apple that almost smoked itself...

I have one or two very good pipes, including a couple of budget ones which are remarkable for flavours. However, my recent freehand Invicta has turned out to be "magic" - although I stopped testing at Cabbie's, because that's peak magic, for me. I think it's 90% to do with the piece of briar and, although of a good quality to begin with, the chance of it specifically smoking so perfectly is random.

(@AirOne, mine is wonky too. It matters not one jot).

I have nearly 50 pipes and love my Dunhills, Castello’s and a Comoy and dedicate certain pipes to one type off blend. But I have one pipe - a Chacom - that smokes beautifully regardless of the blend. It could be an English, a Virginia, a Virginia Perique or English Aromatic… it smokes wonderfully. It’s also one of the least expensive pipes in my collection. It’s the only Chacom I have but it is a keeper!
