This really is a prototype. Finished it anyway, b/c this finish is so easy to do.
My math told me it would balance, but I'm a lawyer, so you know my math is lousy. Turned out it works. I put the feet very close together as a proof of concept -- if it worked like this, then I know it will work with the feet wider apart and slightly angled, which will be more pleasing aesthetically, I think.

Holds eight pipes, but takes a lot of space to do it. Will probably add small holes for a Czech tool and cleaners to the next version.

That's different!!! Ive been working with metal wire on trying to come up with a "rack" that will use less space, but hold the same amount of pipes.. It's nice to see that you're thinking outside the standard pipe cabinet or round holder!!

1X4 red oak

stock 3/8 inch dowel

miter box/saw

3/8 inch cutting bit

3/4 inch hole bit

assorted clamps (You want to clamp the oak stock tightly to scrap when you drill, so there is no breakout on the other side.)

sand paper

Minwax cherry stain

spray polyurethane

about a microgram of gorilla glue
Red oak is 12 inches long. Dowels (5 1/4 inches) attache at 90 degrees, four inches from one end.
Highest of the rack holes are centered one inch from the end and one inch form the side. All other holes on two inch centers from there (and one inch from sides).

Next iteration will be a keeper.
Going to splay the dowel legs a bit for more stability. What's cool is that if you look at it from the right angle, it seems to just be floating on its own.
