Did Peterson Make a Roya Irish Without Silver?

I've just run across a couple pipes marked Peterson over Royal Irish without any silver trim. Instead they are a light color sandblast with different wood shank extensions. Are these a lower quality Royal Irish or are they legit examples? Sorry, no pics...the auctions ended but I was a bit too scared to pop for them.

Another popped up, unsmoked, for cheap so I figured I'd gamble. Here's hoping it's real. The seller knows nothing about pipes (hence the upside-down stem) but his products have been good in past.

I like that pipe. It looks pretty similar (except for stain colour) to a Peterson House pipe that I own.

(scratches forehead...) I think I remember reading somewhere about an older "Royal Irish" line that wasn't the same as the current incarnation. Maybe this is one of those. It was definitely a Peterson line from the 70s or 80s that had the same name as one of their better lines from today.

That's a beautiful pipe! It does appear to be an authentic Peterson "106", though I don't recall ever seeing one like it. But hey, I'm by no means an expert on Petes! Congrats on it, and let us know what you find out!

It's definitely legit, looks like it has a briar shank extension/accent. The P-Lip hole definitely looks old skool, 70's perhaps ( also the style of the pipe ). What did you pay for it?

You're welcome. You definitely got a deal on that, especially since it is unsmoked ( is it? Do you have pipe in hand? ). IIRC the last Petes we had at SPC as legit unsmoked estates for 50-something bucks were the Kapets ... which is not a bad pipe in itself, but definitely not as good looking as this.

I don't have it in hand yet. The guy didn't know about pipes so I'm taking it with a grain of salt and the return policy is good. If it's as the seller says, I'm pretty stoked.
