Bella just asked me if I needed a tobacco grinder, y’know one of those pocket sized things I think people use for weed. I had a look at what she meant and said “erm no, but thanks for asking”. She said, “oh I thought it would have been handy for them ropes and pluggy things you smoke”…

with the exception of art, this was the first time she has offered to purchase me something tobacco or pipe related.

I can’t help thinking I should have just said yes to the piece of crap.

That was very kind and thoughtful of her. Perhaps you could have suggested something more useful like a new knife or cutting board for doing the same. Those pocket grinders will grind your tobacco into a course pile of brown stuff you will not want to smoke from a pipe. You will not like the result, and that's after you slice off a coin to put into the grinder, which makes it redundant at best. Then she would be hurt because you're not using the thing, she bought you. It's great she's shown an interest in your hobby, and there is nothing wrong with steering her kindness to something you could actually use, and she would see you use.

It occurs to me that I always win big when I send flowers to my wife at her work. Flowers at home are great, but they don't excite the envy of her co workers, which seems to bring her just as much delight as the flowers themselves.
This times 1000. I always send flowers to work. Although that was in the before times. Now she works from home permanently...

Are we talking about something like this?

If so, I do not understand why any pipe smoker would want to grind they're tobacco up at all. This works great for some things, but pipe tobacco is NOT one of those things. In all my years on here I have never heard mention once of taking a plug, block, or rope, slicing off some and grinding it up to a course powder. We either rub it out, cube it, or fold and stuff it in our pipes. I'm confused as hell as to why anyone would do such a thing to their pipe tobacco. And just as confused as to why anyone would tell you it works great for pipe tobacco. Maybe it's just me, but I bet you will NOT like the results, and you won't end up using it and she will be disappointed that you don't. Just suggest something more useful instead.

I find that sometimes it isn't what you say but how you say it. You might want to go to her and say "You know that was very thoughtful of you to want to buy me that thingy a bob, but I don't think I would ever use it. I am touched that you were thinking of me. You're the best." That way you don't have to deal with the thingy a bob, but you made her warm and fuzzy inside.
