I'm all new to pipe smoking. So far, I've smoked cheap aromatics, MB 7 Seas, and two english blends (Early Morning Pipe and My Mixture 965); mostly in brazilian-made wood pipes and some corn cobs.
Today, I happen to be in the Netherlands. I got a new Peterson pipe (a celtic ebony 05) and Peterson's Hyde Park tobacco. I had not seen reviews of it before (I like adventures). So I filled 1/3 of the bowl with it and puffed it up.
Later on, I read some reviews, and the word "lakeland" abounds in many of them. Oh my! Did I just ghost my new super-special pipe? What do you think? Is it going to taste like that from now on? Should I immediately interrupt the breaking-in process and change to something lighter?
PS: What a great pipe! Draw is perfect and the P-lip, once you get used with it, works gently. I also really liked the tobacco, "soapy" taste was nice I think - however, as a begginer, I don't judge anything, just experimenting.

Only you can answer that question if you ghosts it or not. And if you like the taste, who cares??

I've cleaned a Lakelanded pipe before with just proper scraping and whiskey soaked cleaners.
Just don't smoke many more bowls with that one.

If you liked the lakeland flavor, just make that your lakeland pipe. I have many pipes dedicated to that floral wonderfulness!

I don't remember smoking Hyde Park but assuming it is a Lakeland because it's made by G-H may be misleading, G-H also makes one of my favorite plugs-Revor- and while some have commented that they get a slight Lakeland flavor I never have; and I smoke it quite often.

If you detected some soapiness and like it then that's great. I happen to like the Lakelands and I don't dedicate pipes to them.

It's all personal choice and with the reviews largely scoring it 3-4 stars I'd say you chose well. Enjoy.

I thought about dedicating the Pete... However, lakeland tobaccos aren't easy to get where I live. Well, as long it's not ghosted from this first smoke, I'll at least have some more time to think.
The other reason I asked was because, as a begginer, Im not sure I would be able to identify a ghosted pipe. Everything is new and misterious still, to me.

It's a legit Lakeland

Unless you have a pipe for Latakia mixtures, and another for other non-aromatics, it's not very reasonable to dedicate to Lakeland.

My own experience with pipes that have heavy Lakeland ghosts is that there is something in the sauce that stays behind and accumulates in the shank and mortise more than with say, heavy Latakia mixtures. If you rotate types of blends fairly often, you shouldn't have a bowl issue, but if you don't pay extra attention to keeping the shank and mortise clean, you still might have a ghosted pipe. I have smoked Bob's Chocolate on and off for years, never on a regular basis but as a once and a while treat. I have always made it a practice to clean out the shank and mortise with Ever clear, pipe cleaners and Qtips right after smoking and ghosts have never been an issue.

After one bowl, it will probably fade, if you don't want that as your dedicated pipe. You can smoke other blends in your dedicated pipe, as long as you enjoy them with a slight ghosted flavor.

I'm a big fan of Hyde Park, and find it to be rather mild with the Lakeland essence, but that's just me. I dedicate a few pipes to the heavy Lakeland blends like Ennerdale, but have no problem with smoking all types of tobacco in many pipes, including Hyde Park. The only thing I can tell you is to smoke something else in your Peterson and see if you can detect any ghosting from the Hyde Park. I think that everyones sensitivity to Lakelands is different. Most of all, just enjoy your smoking experiences and try not to worry about it too much. :puffy:

Though Hyde Park is made by Gawith and Hoggarth it is most certainly not a 'Lakeland' blend by what is commonly understood to be so.
I have smoked many tins and never once experienced the infamous 'Lakeland Sauce' that they use on their aromatics.
What I think you are tasting is a ghost itself, a ghost of the air in and around the factory where all their blends are made. Your pipe will be fine.
Welcome to the forum by the way :puffy:

Jay.

I'm with Jay on this one. I was lured to Hyde Park because it promised to be a lakeland... but I really don't get that essence at all. I've had three bowls in the past two days. I do like it. It's fairly strong with a great nic hit. Is it still made by Gawith? I was under the impression that the Scandinavian group took it over not so long ago?
Also, I have heard several stories about how it ghosts a pipe. I am also not getting that. Could it be the Hyde Park that I am smoking is not the same mixture of a year or two ago?
~also~

I think one would truly need to dedicate a pipe for G+H's rich dark honeydew. It's possibly the most floral of the lakelands. it smells like Liz Taylor's perfume. I have two pipes dedicated to it.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone whose ever tried that blend would disagree.
