Always fun to mention:

The Devil Anse shape was born entirely by accident.

After rehearsing a scene in the Hatfields & McCoys TV miniseries, Kevin Costner was unhappy with his performance and thought his character would be improved with a prop of some sort. A pipe came to mind, so he headed back up the road several miles from the on-location backwoods set to a general store he'd noticed driving in, scrounged an old pipe, and modified it to look more rustic by throwing away the stem and whittling the shank down a bit.

The end.

He was happy, the director was happy, and everyone involved was happy. It was a slice of brilliant intuition.

The distinctive shape, however, with the equally distinctive name and which would soon become PipeWorld famous, was simply luck. It was all he could find in the store.

Paul Menard just made a nice blasted one, and has made this shape quite well previously.

Peterson still (sort of) makes the JAP.

Meaning there are modern-made reproductions of a pipe they made 100+ years ago floating around.
