Please read Rule 9 before starting another thread. -jpm

This is my 3rd thread. I have got impeccable help from everyone to start my adventure. Feedback on starter tobacco, storage, pipes, and approach to it all advice.

My question here is with what I have purchased below how should I separate or dedicate these tobaccos to a pipe? Do I use any of them in either pipe, or is there a best method to dedicating a pipe to cavendishes, or Virginians, etc? Please list tobaccos below that should be grouped tp a single pipe. If any?

I have below:

2 MM cob pipes- low cost and everyone says they are great for beginners. I also have a Scotte starter kit that someone suggested I could just trash it. So 3 low cost pipes.

With a $50 tobacco budget focusing on very mild beginner low cost samples, with your feedback, and hitting those with 95% 5/4 star reviews I ordered below.

Captain Black Original
Captain Black Cherry
Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic
Lane Limited BCH
Lane Limited 1-Q
Amphora Virginia
Match Carter Hall (copycat)
Borkum Riff Bourbon Whiskey

Some blends really sing in certain pipes. I have a cob dedicated to Black Frigate and another for Crooner for this reason. Frequently I have several pipes for latakia blends and others for virginias or burleys. Experiment and see what works for you.

Some of those tobaccos will leave an aftertaste that will carry over and influence the next selection of tobacco to varying degrees. Some people like that or tolerate it, other people gripe to no end about it.

I would focus on one blend at a time so you can get an impression of whether or not you like it, then move to another. After several bowls the taste from the previous blend should diminish, and you can get an idea what the current blend is all about.

That's how I would start out...

I don't think you have to worry too much about separate pipes with the selection of tobaccos you are smoking now. They are all basic aromatics. If you had Latakia blends or Perique or some Virginias and some Burleys, you could designate a pipe for each. Right now, I think you are fine smoking what you want in what pipe you want.

With those tobaccos just try them one by one. If you find one is very strong for you then set that pipe aside and continue trying other tobaccos in the next pipe. If they are are comparable then just keep smoking in any pipe. If you do get one that is really strong to your taste it may well affect the taste of the other blends. That ebony pipe may taste off for a few bowls. I've had one of those and it wasn't too bad but I haven't used it in a while. It took a little breaking in.

There are only 2 aromatics you need to smoke and they are
Cult Blood Red Moon and Sutliff Molto Dolce. That's it, nothing else and then save the rest of your pipes for other blends.

I dedicate all of my blends to certain genres and I also dedicate certain blends to certain pipes. For example, I have 2 Rad Davis Lovat's dedicated to my batch of 2007 Esoterica Stonehaven. I have a few pipes dedicated to my 1998 , 2005 Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky to a Scott Thile Bulldog , a Rad Davis Billiard and a Jack Howell Billiard. I have a Rad Davis Zulu dedicated to my 2012 Mac Baren Old Dark Fired. I have others but you get the idea. I have found over the years that I get a better smoking experience dedicating my pipes. Others couldn't be bothered and that is their choice.

If you look up that kit on Amazon, the product title mentions “pear wood root”, whereas other details and the video mention ebony. So that’s confusing.
I am going to look up that company and email them. If ebony it’s out. If pear I can consider it for something like a chocolate if I ever try it.

I'm pretty new at this I now have six briar pipes and one cherry wood and a couple of cobs. Since I have discovered Virginia's Vapors and now Burley I can't make it through a bowl of aromatic tobacco. When I try I use a cob. I have noticed that if I smoke the aromatic in one of my briar pipes It definitely ghosts it for a couple of bowls even if I clean it really well.

Dedicating A pipe to A specific blend - NO.

Latakia/Balkan blends and aromatics WILL ghost pipes. I have pipes for Latakia/Balkans, pipes for Virginia/VaPers/other blends and pipes for aromatics.

Except for the Amphora Virginia, all the tobaccos on your list are aromatic blends.

Despite what others have advised, water flushing (and I have tried) will reduce, but not abolish Latakia/Balkan or aromatic ghosts. ?
Those require full-on exorcism ?

The only true dedicated pipe I have is for aromatics, which is 90% Ennerdale. The rest get crossed over between genres, except one Comoy's that sees mainly straight VA. I gave up dedicating pipes to genres because I'd forget and don't like rules, and don't have enough pipes to dedicate to blends. For me, it hasn't affected my enjoyment in the slightest.

Worry about it when you've worked your way out of the aromatic phase, and see if it's something you'd like to do. It's no hard and fast rule that you MUST DEDICATE PIPES!!

And that Borkum Riff Whiskey is nasty ??

Thanks everyone this helps. Sounds like not a lot to worry about yet. I think the best advice for now is tackle one at a time and enjoy. The Amphora Virginia appears to be all Virgina and Lane BCA is all cavendish. Not sure if that matters any but will try one or both of those in separate pipe before aromatics.

Now the big decision. Which one do I try first? Any recommendations? Should the flavored hints (whiskey, vanilla) be last or first? Sorry to make this a big deal but I am excited about it and instead of blindly jumping in would rather ask the experienced experts.

When I stared smoking a pipe ( in the early '70s) there was no internet, a very limited choice of mainly OTC blends. I was a poor undergraduate, so could only afford one blend at a time. I would have to stretch that out until I got my next allowance.

Fast forward to 3 years ago when I took up pipes again - the internet meant a bewildering array of choice. I went from one blend to a couple of dozen blends in a matter of months. I was like a kid in a candy store.

I was lucky to have a friend who had been smoking pipes for years who kindly provided me with sample bags of different blends and different genres. This really help me broaden my palate.

I say, try them all. You can then decide on your favourites. But tastes change over time, and as your palate matures. Initially I didn't much like Virginias/VaPers as they were somewhat muted and lacking in flavour compared to Latakia/Balkan blends and aromatics. Now I find that their more subtle flavours appealing to me more and more.

Wishing you Much Enjoyment on your adventure of discovery.
