Clean the stinger off and post a picture. You’re looking for the size of the ball, the number of holes in the ball and anything written on the stinger.

Right now I’d date it late 1930’s to the 50’s

The details on the stinger matter.

Thank you. I should have it next week. I’ll post then. I’ve read that you clean the gourd up with a bottle brush, dry, and Vaseline the cork. Is that so? Do I clean the meerschaum? How? I have an unsmoked pioneer that I’m hesitant to break in until I know how to care for it.

There is an entire thread here about maintenance for them, but you’re spot on about cleaning. As for the meerschaum it can be cleaned and polished with 1,200 grit and higher wet sanding. Light pressure is key.

This, plus let the water soak into the meerschaum for about 20 minutes before you hit it with the grit. Meerschaum gets softer, which can allow you to go REAL light and even.

I have a gourd calabash which I bought new in the mid-70's
I stuffed the gourd chamber with cotton balls and soaked them with a clear peach brandy (any clear spirit should do) for 24 hours, then repeated.
It made a huge difference.
