Sponsored two brothers, in sequence, in Guatemala over three or four years, with notes and drawings back and forth, translated by nuns, as I remember. Finally I think urban legends shut down the program. Folks there were told U.S. people were kidnapping their kids for organ transplants. This is what I heard, but it may be fanciful. The lines may have been broken because of other factors. The family farmed and the mom did a produce market, if I remember. Sweet people. I hope our small contributions helped. The kids had a few years of school they might have otherwise missed, and I hope attained literacy. The kids did drawings, which were always imaginative. 'Hope the postal system gets revived or somehow replaced.
