since its sunday, the post office is closed, however the PO boxes are still open. so i got my mail from yesterday and theres two package slips. i know one is my new zeppelin pipe as the tracking number said its at my post office. the other is most likely my sample of anglers dream. im a highly impatient person, i dont want to have to wait till tomorrow to get them

I feel you. I missed the mailman on saturday too, but I'm waiting for a box with 40 pipes to show up

And a second package with 40 more by the end of the week.

You know the funny thing is, the post office is absolutely self supporting. Congress passed some BS years ago that drains funds out of the post office for other uses, thats the only reason the USPS is having budget problems.

Yeah Lawrence, I wasnt trying to start a political debate, just bringing it to peoples attention. They've been discussing the budget problems with USPS for a few years now, and I just found out myself that its an act of congress thats behind it all.

In 2006 the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act required the postal service to prefund some pension and benefit liabilities. The postal service has been unable to meet the massive obligations this requires - a full third of USPS revenues - and runs massive deficits as a result. I don't think congress(critters) created this problem in any real way as it's a union/legacy costs issue; but I am certain that congress is unable to fix it. The USPS was never really self-sufficient as evidenced by it's own inability to fund their public sector union pension after being forced to - you know - actually fund it. Congress is able to use a portion of funds held in escrow for the fund for other purposes - and they do - but it's a massively small amount relative to the yearly pension fund payment requirement.
It's just a part of the larger story...

Starting Jan. 1, 2012 our mail will come three times a week.
The local post office is closing and the nearest one will now be 18 miles away.

We did away with Saturday mail delivery a few years ago in Canada, and to be completely and blatantly honest, I really don't miss it at all. I mean, really, its pretty rare that there is anything so pressing that it can't wait until Monday, and if it was so damned urgent, it should have been sent via courier.
