I usually only read clothing fashion stories long enough to be amused at the outlandish looks of clothes that couldn't be worn anywhere, and to marvel at the prices only imaginable at a Paris (or other) fashion show. However, I was stopped long enough to read into a fashion story, playing on the Fathers Day theme about how old timey, retro casual wear that typifies dads has become a new school of fashion, things like madras shirts, pre-washed jeans, and other conspicuously ordinary clothing that now attracts younger people shifting out of their skinny jeans and slim-fit shirts for these. Of course, the whole tale fell apart when they reeled off the prices of dad clothes as rendered by the big city shops. I think the "orthopedic athletic shoes" ran (pun) about six hundred bucks, and and jeans even more. That's not what dad's pay, but never mind. So most of us will be amused to find that, in our eight, ten, or thirty-year-old duds we have entered into the realm of haut couture. I had to smile and shake my head. At last fashion I can and do wear to Walgreens and the grocery. Fancy that.

There's no accounting for fashion. Knee breeches, hose, and low shoes mean you're either Ben Franklin or an urban gang-banger, with a couple of centuries separating the two.

I'm a jeans and tshirt with western boots kind of guy with the occasional button up shirt if I leave the house. My leather outback hat will have to rot off my head before I give it up.

Most days I’m a T-shirt and jeans or cargo short kind of guy with sandals (no socks) or boat shoes. Dressing up is a Hawaiian or Guyabera shirt and an appropriate hat. I do have a gray suit and a dark gray Fedora.

Khakis & Oxford cloth Mon-Thurs, khakis & Hawaiian shirts the rest of the week. Diabetic shoes always. Bill-style, period.
I'm betting that article was in the NYT, right, Tom? I saw it, saw the clothes looked like Lands' End/GQ from 30 yrs ago, said to myself, "You got this knocked," & went on to the tech & obits. Fashionista Fascist, that's me.

I enjoy getting gussied up, but I rarely have an opportunity. It's a big deal when I feel even a tie or bow tie with my shirt is appropriate. It's difficult to underdress these days at church or social events or anywhere. When I was working a day job, I had increasing latitude. As a young guy, I jacketed up with a tie, and often wore dress shoes, but in later years, casual Friday was any day I wanted unless I had a special visitor or event. I worked with quite a few scientists who felt dressing up looked like you didn't do laboratory work hence weren't "in the game." People didn't want to get promoted into administrative slots requiring dress wear. At many places of worship you'll hear grumbles from your brethren if you dress up much; they're afraid their wives will ask them to follow suit (as it were). I do like being in high fashion just by wearing my old stuff which I'll wear anyway. I must have pockets in my shirt for sunglasses, pen, and notes for errands (also called shopping lists). Some of my favorite shirts come from Walmart.

>> worked with quite a few scientists who felt dressing up looked like you didn't do laboratory work hence weren't "in the game." -- Yup. I remember Isaac Asimov wrote a great bit about that in one of his autobiogs, I forget which one. The lab coat was a badge of honor, except to one wise-@$$ who liked to lord his position over the other guys. He got his comeuppance, all right, & in a TOTALLY WGACA way.
