Is a Custombilt a good pipe?

IMO absolutely! I have two and they are fantastic pipes. Ugly, but fantastic.

Yes they are, I have 4 and they are very good smokes.

Hmmm, they were popular during the 40's, 50' and 60's and went out of business in about 1990. They actually used pretty decent briar and were noted for their large sized pipes. I have a couple but have not smoked them in years.

Some would consider them on a par with Dr. Grabow from the same era, which is probably fair.

I have the large pot shape with silver band, great smoker, a little heavy as shown by my chewed up saddle bit.

Good enough pipe that I want another stem put on it.

They are nice. I have on and got rid of one but if I see one for the right price, I will pick it up.

They are several steps above Dr. Grabow, I have several and they smoke wonderfully. Sure they are chunky and a bit on the homely side, but what they lack in looks they make up for in smokability. I use these as my knock around pipes, the way many members use cobs.

I think they are great pipes, so much that I have a pile of them. I will have to get a picture together I would say above grabow grade by quite a bit. The prices for them have gone up in the last six months since Bill Unger passed. He wrote a book on them which is great if you can pick up a copy.
