Curious property of pipe

I have a neodymium magnet glued to the end of my pipe tamper. Very handy to keep it nearby my smoking area.
Just bought a Johs Sandblasted Bent Dublin that must have some sort of ferrous lining in bowl because magnet on my tamper is attracted to sides of bowl from top to bottom.
No other pipe in my collection does this. Anybody got any ideas about this very strange behavior? Like the pipe and it smokes good.

Fascinating. Was this a new unsmoked pipe or estate? Is the attraction equal all around the bowl? Did it come with a coated chamber? Is the attraction enough to move or lift the pipe?

I don't mean to sound alarmist but you might not want to be puffing on that after scraping the bowl until the manufacturer weighs in.

Might it have a steel tube reinforcement for the shank?

I once was cleaning out an old estate pipe and found at the bottom of the bowl a thick brass washer! I assumed that some previous owner put it in there to perhaps save on tobacco by slightly reducing the capacity of the bowl.

Maybe this is what you have though obviously not brass.

I have about six Johs pipes of various shapes and finishes, but I've never tested them with a magnet. The carver, Mogen Johansen is famous for his fast pace of work. I'd be surprised if he adds anything exotic like a ferrous coating to the chambers, but I'll keep it in mind. I've always been impressed with his pipes for their light weight relative to their size and the snappy workmanship and smart variations in traditional styles. I've always been surprised he doesn't get much attention on Forums. I've mentioned Johs in a number of posts with tepid response.

New pipe. Attraction is equal on inside of bowl. Chamber has a black coating. Attraction is slight but noticeable.

Tamper is the common aluminum pipe nail with a button neodymium magnet the same size as head of the nail glued to it. Have been using it for years and this is first pipe that has any magnetic attraction. It is only attracted on inside of bowl. I am very satisfied with pipe and am not trying to disparage Johs in any way. Just curious.

I don't know, could it be that it was sandblasted with steel shavings instead of sand?

I just investigated and if there is shot blasting with iron particles. I bet it was shot-blasted with steel and the impregnated particles in the wood are what attracts the magnet.
