Cracks Around Draft Hole

I bought an estate pipe. I smoked it today for 2 times and it gets too hot when I smoked it. I noticed that cracks around the draft hole. Is this just cake or did I burned out my pipe ? And what can I do ?

Run a reamer down it. Probably start with a smallish drill and work up until you clear some of that cake. If you have machinist drill set that will help. I ream mine to 11/64. Reamers are not drills but if you only have drills that's OK.

Yep, clean it down to wood.
That could be carbon, or could be burned up. Either way, I would ream it down to wood.

Here the McMaster reamer number 3106A17.

I'm thinking it's cake. But if it's wood that burning away you'll see wood where you remove that thin cracked edge part.

I'll add too that a wider hole is going to make draft easier. You'll be OK and have a newish pipe.
