Title was corrected -Rule #9, Title Capitalization
I picked it up at an antique store for 19 bucks.

Stinger has 4 holes at the end of the ball. Left side of the shank has KAYWOODIE in all caps print and “Standard” in font underneath it. Right side says 37 G (or c?)

I’m gonna make this my first run at restoration. Does anyone know an approximate year, or can someone tell me how to date a Kaywoodie?

I also picked up a Ben Wade Golden Walnut that I’m about 100% certain doesn’t have the original stem.

MBSD pipes info is wrong. The use of the “imported briar”stamp goes back to 1937.
Patents go back to 1928 with the invention of the Drinkless stinger.
Four digit numbers go back to the 1920’s thru 1936-7. 2 and 3 digit numbers began with the introduction of the flame grain in 1936-7.
After that they used 2 and 3 digit numbers onward. There were modifiers used from the 1930’s on.
Forget about MDSB datings and use Pipedia and PipePhil for an information source.

The KBB surrounded by a cloverleaf ended in 1933.
I really object to bad scholarship, especially when good scholarship already exists.
Also ignore MDSB pipes info on Barlings.

C'mon, now.

We're talking about humans, here. For most of them facts come in a distant second place to feelings. (When they are considered at all).

How else will the Jim Jones's, David Miscavige's, and Marshall Applewhites of the world get ahead?

Pipes aren't even on the radar compared to really important stuff like that, and here you are trying to disrupt it...

Kaywoodie transitioned from 4-hole to 3-hole stingers in the 50s. There’s probably some overlap but after the 50s they are all 3-hole. When in doubt about having an older or newer pipe of a long running model, the stinger is your main indicator. They are not interchangeable. Stamps change in font and ordering. But who can keep all that straight? And the older pipes are generally better quality. The Standard is an okay pipe. It is usually a chunk of briar with an area void of grain. Like a bald spot.

So I’m looking at at 48-50? That would align with something I read last night. If correct

I went through some stuff on my desktop that I’ve screenshotted over the years. That info is compiled based on catalogs. And it’s not complete. The Standard was not offered in 1947. It was offered in 1955 for $4. And it’s offered steadily into the 70s. Knowing that the stinger transition happens in the 50s, I’ve always referred to 4-hole stinger Standard as an early 50s pipe. I know there is a pretty large archive at the S.M. Frank factory. Maybe someone will write a book someday. Probably take years.

Amazing. I *have* read on here that precisely dating a Kaywoodie is tricky, but narrowing it down to that time frame is pretty nice. I think I did alright at 19 bucks then

This will be my first foray into restoration.

Thanks so much for the information!

Most likely, in my opinion. The fat shank and small ball on the stinger leads me to say it’s the end of the four hole era (and they overlap well into the three hole era), and the Standard designation came out sometime between 47-55 from all I’ve seen.
