Hello guys, recently i had a small scare regarding some Mac Baren virginia. Now I am pretty sure it wasn't mold, however this got me thinking more seriously about the prospect of it. I have a whole host of different tobaccos, however in addition to those i have quite a few tins of GL pease and a smidgen of Cornell and Diehl. One of my favorite VAs is Union Square and I am also a big fan of Jackknife. However I wanted to know, would you fine gents presently consider cellaring it or in the wake of the mold problems going back years and even regarding the few that have cropped up recently have you crossed them off your cellaring list? In addition how common have your problems been with their blends (pertaining to mold) all around? Thanks for your input as usual. Just trying to decide if I want to keep cellaring Mac Baren VAs or start branching out to GL pease again! All the best fellas.

If the production date is 2016, avoid at all costs.

Much of my cellar is Pease, C&D, and Mac Baren.
I have lurked for quite some years now and I know you have historically enjoyed C and D blends and Pease. Would you say your incident of mold has been low-insignificant?

Only affected by the 2016 incident. Ten tins of Bijou.
Ive always been curious about bijou, since it was for a time trending around the pipesmoking community. However the calamitous release has deterred me even until now. Still the fact that you haven't experienced mold otherwise is reassuring.

I've had the most problems with Pease/C&D cakes and flakes. I suppose any blend can get mold but their ribbon blends seem bullet proof.

I hope you don't bristle at my extremely specific follow up, but could you estimate by any chance the rate of incidence of these mold occurrences? Say out of 20 tins of flake would one be likely to discover mold? I ask this because I really only like their flakes/plugs. Unfortunate lol.

Yup, I just popped open a tin of Savinelli 140 from 2016. Was a huge disappointment but SPC sent out a replacement tin with no questions asked. As long as they are around I do not worry about loss as I know they will always replace a moldy tin. I did, however, lose 4 years of age and a special year of that specific tobacco as they were using the Italian Dark Fired florets but I was just happy they still had more tins as it is a limited release.

Overall, I’ve only had mold issues twice from C&D in 11 years... that’s really not too bad, it’s an organic product and mold just happens from time to time. I have always been more than satisfied by the outstanding customer service from SPC.

SPC replaced all of mine with Black Frigate.?
Just curious why you didn’t replace them with more Bijou? It has been a long time but I remember really enjoying that blend. I may as well go through and do some spring cleaning of my cellar and pick out all of my 2016 tins from C&D. Not looking forward to it but it beats opening a 10 year old tin just to have some big fat fluffy mold staring back at ya.

Wow, thats an exceedingly comforting number. Also all of my tins are from 2017-19 ( havent been cellaring for that long...I think many of us only started recently). Though I did manage to find one tin of plantation evening from 2012, might give that a whirl. Though I honestly prefer tobacco fresh or 1-5 years old. Unless its a pure va i just find aged to be a touch too mellow...of course its still better than nothing, which is why I cellar :)

Typed few things. Then remembered use of caps. Don't feel like typing again, but if you are concerned, get smaller tins. Might get lucky and don't have to throw away all of them.

Well I already have 50 plus tins of gl pease, so im already good and fucked I suppose. Hope that isnt a reflection of your experience though. Does that mean youve had to discard quite a few tins from the C & D blending house? Also thanks alot guys for all of the input for good or for ill!

I probably have around 50 lbs of C&D and GLP blends cellared. Maybe more. Obviously, I'm not concerned about it.
Damn, that's probably the size of my whole cellar. Man, wish I didn't like pease blends so much. Wish he'd quash concerns since i've seen this kinda thing around on various forums and the pipe reddit (concerns about mold). But perhaps that is simply the nature of an extremely natural product. Honestly though...I think id prefer as natural as possible, but unnatural in whatever sense that is necessary to inhibit mold! lol, I don't fetishize natural that hard.

Didn't want more moldy tins so I just asked for something I liked. Bijou was kind of sneaky too. If not outright moldy, mold appeared in just a few days after opening it.
