I just got a vintage MM corncob pipe and it's natural, really natural. It's almost fluffy. So I sanded it down and was thinking about applying a varnish, especially because there are small pin sized holes on the bottom. What kind of varnish if any would be safe to use? Thanks in advanced, and I plan on posting a before and after of my customized cob!

In THIS video from Missouri Meerschaum, they explain how they finish a cob pipe. Plaster of Paris, and lacquer. Have a look.
Edit: My text didn't post so I'll repeat it here.
