I avoid using them, preferring to dig the ash out with a Pipe tool.

Pipe repair guys love it when you snap the tenon of the bit off in

the shank.

I used to . Now I just gently dig out any remains with a pipe tool. A broken tenon or cracked mortise are a pain in the butt!

If you tap out your pipes, whether its against a cork knocker or the palm of yoir hand, always hold the pipe by the shank, not the bit. If a few gentle taps don't clear out the bowl, use a pipe tool as Fred mentioned.

I like knockers. :)

I use a pipe knocker all the time. But, as cautioned above if you have some difficult dottle, use a dottle digger. And, never hold a pipe by the stem to "knock it out" or you could possibly "knock it out" of your collection.

I use an old champagne cork, that I super-glue to the bottom of an old ashtray. If it gets too dirty or it comes away from the ashtray, reglue another one in place. Any sparkling wine cork will do the trick, so you don't need to spend a fortune getting the proper ones, and you get to have a good drink too.

I have a cork knocker in my ashtray and I've never cranked a shank. Briar is a lot harder then these guys realize so you can take a really good two handed grip and just smack the snot out of your pipe (and dottle!) against a cork knocker. I prefer the whipping action of grabbing it low on the bit but some guys like to choke up and use sheet force. Feel free to try either one to see which one works best for you!

Yeah Haunted. I just used your technique with my entire collection and jeez! Anyone want to buy my pipes at half off? Please note that briars and shanks will be shipped in seperate boxes (some assembly requried).

Although I have several pipe ashtrays with the knocker, I use them for rests and generally remove the dottle with pipe tool or nail.
